“Yes. It was very nice.”

“What was missing?”

“Um, woodsmoke. I have gotten used to having meals prepared over the fire.”

He nodded. “As do I. Most of the food will be prepared that way or steamed on coals under layers of leaves and sand.”

“Oh, that’s fun.”

He chuckled. “You like food?”

“It keeps me warm.”

“That isn’t an issue where we live, miss.”

“That will be interesting.”

She got up and walked around the confined space. She wasn’t used to being confined and didn’t know how to play the board game that two of the others were playing. When she cruised past a wardrobe and saw the glass panels containing books, she gasped and opened the bookcase, reading titles and finding three books she wanted to read.

Kana found a comfortable chair in the corner and started reading.

When lights came on around her, she smiled and kept reading about the island’s history and the volcanic disruption. They were not affected by the ash clouds as much as a larger land mass would be.

She closed the book when it ended and found herself alone with Koa. “Oh. Where is everyone?”

“Gone to bed. It is near midnight.”

“Oh. Sorry.”

She got up and put the books back where she had found them, locking the cabinet.

Koa offered his hand, and she put her fingers on the back of his wrist. He smiled. “You have been trained in the manners of the city.”

“Yes. Kabyl’s mother is a stickler for protocol.”

He nodded. “In the islands, we make more direct contact.”

“Oh? How?”

He turned his hand palm up and placed her hand in his. She blinked as her inner consciousness perked up. “I thought that separation between dragons was important so that no accidental imprinting occurred.”

“If it happens, I will let you know.” Koa smiled.

“Do you do arranged marriages?”

“No. Dragons must choose their matches. Their humans need only go along with it.”

“That seems odd. Oh, this is me.” She softly spoke as there were other doors nearby.

“Good night. Breakfast will be made when you wake.”

“How long until we arrive?”

“It depends on the wind, but twenty-six hours or less will see us there, under any conditions. Fourteen hours if the wind remains at our back.”

She smiled and opened her door, retrieving her hand. “Good night.”

Inside her room, she got ready for bed and looked out the window that showed the world down below. It was still all ocean with less and less ice floes in it.
