Her dragon was stirring. She could feel it behind her eyes.

She lay on her bed and tried to communicate, but the presence wasn’t interested in her. It was far too interested in the males around her. It was looking at their energy patterns like they were some kind of buffet.

Kana shrugged and settled while her dragon weighed the pros and cons. There were some things that dragons had to decide.

Kana was dressed and having breakfast at dawn. The air was dramatically different. The sun hotter as it rose. She settled with a cup of coffee and looked out at the glittering ocean, and a weird purr came from her throat.

The chef chuckled. “Feeling good?”

“Yes. There is something about the heat around me just makes my limbs feel looser and improves my mood. Don’t get me wrong. The ice was an excellent place to learn, but this is actually starting to feel nice.”

“Good. More coffee?”

“Please. Where are the others?”

“Oh, they are on island time. It takes longer to do anything at home, so conserving energy is common.”

Koa chuckled as he approached. “And some of us just enjoy silence when we have it.”

She smiled as she got more coffee and nodded. “Good morning.”

Kana looked out at the glittering water and left Koa to the silence. He got up and gathered his breakfast.

He cleared his throat when he returned to the table. “So, miss, how did you sleep?”

“Very well. I left my dragon mulling over dragon matters and just went to sleep.”

He paused with his food on the utensil. “You think separately?”

“Yes. She is strong and knows what she wants, so she was making decisions for herself.”

“You were dreaming.”

“No. She is trying to find a mate of her own. In her previous life, she died defending the diamond dragon while she was still young and able to be damaged.”

“When was this?”

“A very long time ago, but we were in an area that was jungle in the summer and desert in the winter. It was beautiful. The weather suited me.”

“Well, our weather is warm all year round. Different fruits are ripe at different times. Some are available constantly.”

“That will take getting used to. Up north, the food is more protein and fat-based.”

“Our food is fairly light, but if you have dietary needs, they will be easy to accommodate.”

“I should be able to adapt.” She sipped her coffee. “I am looking forward to finding out what you want from the volcanoes.”

“I believe that we want more islands.”

“Interesting. I can do that. Well, I am fairly certain that I can.” She chuckled. “We will find out.”

Her dragon whispered in her mind that they could make land and crush civilizations. Kana told her to hush. The world was civilized now, and there were rules and laws.

The dragon sighed and murmured that she could make them a home. A lovely nest. A secure fortress. Just for them.

Koa noted, “You have a strange expression on your face.”

“Yes, well, she’s really perking up and has some interesting thoughts as to where we should live.” Kana chuckled.
