“Really? My beast is quiet. I just get emotion from him.”

“Well, she’s an ancient. I guess they must have been closer to the surface and gradually faded down over time.”

Koa cocked his head. “Interesting.”

“Yes. She is strong-willed and knows what she wants.”

“What about what you want?”

Kana chuckled. “My wants are simple. I want to be warm. I want to be useful, and I want to be free.”

“Free?”

“Free. Make choices. Be responsible for myself. Since I decanted, someone has been taking care of me. I don’t like that.”

The others emerged and got their breakfasts. Today, they were wearing less than yesterday. Loose shirts and lower coverings that were wrapped around and tied on a hip.

They were... larger than they had been the day before. She looked at Koa and frowned. “Why are they a different shape?”

Koa chuckled. “It is the difference in the type of clothing you wear. The clothing of the capital confines and compresses.”

She tapped her corset. “I would have to agree. It takes getting used to.”

Koa smiled. “You don’t mind?”

“No. Why would I? It is just as different as wearing thick furs to walk outside. You do what is necessary and more convenient. I was just wondering what makes them look larger, and it is the change in clothing. Thank you.”

“Would you like to know about my clothing?”

“They are different. You have a robe on over the other clothes.”

“My father’s family is from off the island. You have heard of Japan?”

“I have. It was on my list of countries who had invited me to investigate their volcanoes.” She shrugged. “Your robe does look like one of theirs.”

“That is because it is. The mark on the back is my father’s family design.”

She nodded but asked, “Are all your clothing marked?”

“No. Just when I am operating on behalf of the islands.”

“Which you are doing now?”

“Which I am doing until I land and have reported to the queen.”

“Oh. How far are we?”

“The wind has been favourable, and we will be landing in seven hours.”

She smiled. “This will be interesting. Whomever I am assigned to, can you ask them to explain everything as you would to a child? It will just be easier than me asking constant questions.”

Koa chuckled. “I believe I understand. You haven’t experienced other cultures and have only read about vague descriptions in books.”

“That’s a good summation.” Her dragon liked the sound of his laugh. This was going to be awkward.

“Miss Kana, when your beast speaks to you, what does it sound like?”

“It is pictures and emotions and memories.”
