Eltrinia chuckled. “There is a dragon who likes to do magic, and she has created wards around this property. You are invisible here, but the moment you leave, you are trackable. They will find you, so you have to find yourself and all that you are first.”

“What do you mean?”

“You need to learn your limits. That means you need a place where you can do it. You need to be able to hide from those seeking you, and you need to do it with a responsible guardian.”

The way Eltrinia was talking, she had someone in mind.

Kana asked, “When will you know?”

Her guardian and friend chuckled. “About two hours after I make the call. You might have to take a trip to the capital for this.”

Kana looked down at her soft and comfortable clothing. “Do I need to dress up for that?”

“A little. We can send you in some of my clothes, and they will get you some specific clothing for you at the capital. There is an excellent seamstress who can alter fibres to not only shift with you when the time comes but also who can design clothing to withstand your particular manifestation.”

“So, fireproof clothing?”

“Molecularly unstable fireproof clothing. The magic takes up the space between molecules and keeps them connected, drawing them in when you grow or shrink.”

“Nice. That explains why you always look so precise.”

Eltrinia smoothed a hand down her bodice. “No, that is just innate style.”

Kana laughed. She had learned all about how she came to be, how she was grown, and how the others were designed. The fact that Eltrinia had experienced the same thing, the meshing with her own life and that of the people around her, gave Kana hope that the same was possible for herself.

They walked back to the main house, and the bots prepared a meal for them while Eltrinia went to her office to make the call.

It was the call that would set everything in motion.

Chapter Two

Kana turned from side to side. “It is a little big.”

Eltrinia chuckled. “You are a little smaller than I am. Don’t worry. You have your appointment with the seamstress already. You just have to meet the senator, and then you will be able to go and get fitted.”

Kana exhaled. “Thank you for the loan of the clothing. I will make sure that you get it back in good order.”

“You are welcome to take your time, but I am sure Trin or Mirbella will make an effort to get the clothing back to me at the museum.”

Kana shrugged. “I will wait until I meet them before I make a decision on their character.”

“Good girl, Kana.” Eltrinia smoothed her clothing and made sure that the bots were watching the tubes. “Right. Shall we go?”

Kana reached out, and Eltrinia took her hand. They dissolved into smoke and reappeared in the office of a woman whose appearance was surprising. The woman smiled and got to her feet.

“Ah, Cousin Kana Pyrar Lem. It is good to meet you finally.” Trin stepped forward with her hand extended.

Kana reached out and clasped her hand.

Trin’s white brows rose. “Wow, you are warm.”

“That is what Eltrinia says and how she says it. Why do you have her face?”

Eltrinia snorted. “She was one of my contributors without her knowledge. There is a physical resemblance but not much on the power front.”

Trin smiled. “It was surprising for both of us, so we describe ourselves as sisters. You are a cousin. Different origins but all family.”

Kana smiled. “That is what Eltrinia says. So, is there someone out there with my face?”
