“It is obvious when she is flickering forward.” He smiled. “Everything about you gets more intense.”

“Oh. She is rather close to the surface.” Kana didn’t know if she should be embarrassed. “Is it unusual?”

“In a lady, yes. It is unusual. The female dragons on the islands are powerful but tend to have more island-based applications. Fish, soil, flowers, and weather. Yours has a militant look.” He smirked. “It is unmistakable.”

“My dragon came with a history.” She shrugged.

“Do you know how?”

“No. It is being looked into. I wasn’t there, and then I was.”

She looked out at the expanse of water. “I hadn’t realized it would be different colours.”

“It isn’t. The ground beneath the surface has plants, stone, sand, fish. Each item between the surface and the floor of the ocean causes a change in what the human eye sees.”

“Nice.” She stared out at the ocean and asked, “Why are the waves white?”

Koa raised his brows, thought about it, and then told her about wind pushing the surface and currents pulling underneath causing the foaming effect.

She pelted questions, and the others answered as well. They continued until it was lunch time, ate, and then she kept asking questions until Koa said, “Enough. Time to get dressed for the island.”

She looked down. “I am as dressed as I can get without putting on a parka.”

He nodded. “We didn’t think to bring a female garment, but I believe that Lady Trin included something for you.”

“Garment singular? No layers and layers?”

He laughed. “No layers and layers. Just a moment, and I will fetch it.”

She smiled, and internally, she was clapping her hands. The air was getting warmer, and while she loved it, the compression of her corset was annoying.

Chapter Ten

Kana tried to put the dress on, but she had no idea how it worked. She tried to wrap it around her but could not figure out how it worked.

“Have you managed it?” Koa asked.

“I am not sure. I think I should just stick with the other stuff.”

“You will boil. Do you have it on?”

“Yes.”

“Hold it in place. I am coming in.”

She blinked in surprise as he opened the door, found the long edges, and spun the dress so that the long edges were on either side of her shoulder. He tied it neatly and patted it. “There you go.”

“Thank you. This feels a little breezy.”

He laughed. “That is the idea. Come to the forward deck. We can watch the islands as we approach.”

Kana took steps and felt distinctly comfortable. For the first time since the fire manifested, she felt that the temperature was right. The sandals were laced up and ended up beneath her knees, and the wrap was just above them.

The others were at the front of the viewing area, where a series of panels had been removed to show the frontal windows. The islands were grey-green smudges on the horizon.

“They are just floating there in the middle of nowhere.”

Alanu said, “They are formed from the very volcano that we want you to work with. The lava rises, and the islands form.”
