“Sounds warm on the feet.”

He snorted softly. “We move to the new islands when soil has covered the stone and the heat is no longer focused.”

“Oh. Sensible. When will we arrive?”

“Four hours. We have to begin slowing now, or we will overshoot the landing area,” Akamu murmured.

“Oh. How does that happen?”

Luano chuckled. “We just cut the engine to minimum propulsion, slowing every few minutes.”

“Interesting. So, you are just gliding in?”

“Correct. There is a landing area with a series of tethers to keep it down,” Ikaika murmured. “We settle and throw lines to those below.”

“We do?”

Koa corrected, “The crew do.”

“Oh. May I stay here?”

“Of course. Is your bag packed?”

“Yes.”

“I will have it taken to the loading area.” Koa nodded. “The dress suits you, by the way. I can’t believe that Lady Trin thought to send black.”

She chuckled. “She’s good that way.”

Kana looked at the islands in the distance. She settled against the railing and watched them come closer. The plume of vapour rising in the distance caught her attention. That was what she was there for.

“Who is on the volcano research team?” She asked it absently.

Ikaika said, “Luano and myself. We have assistants, and there are researchers from other countries.”

“So, what do you want me to do?”

“Help us redirect the eruptions and keep our people safe. There is another one building, and any help is welcome.”

“I may fumble a bit.” She focused on the plume in the distance. “But I will try to keep everyone alive and not scorched.”

“Any assistance is welcome.”

“Is there a water dragon available to hose things down if my control slips?”

Luano nodded. “I am one. I will be there to assist.”

“Good. That is comforting.” She stared at the distant islands, and her dragon began to look for pools of magma and analyze pressure.

Hours passed while her dragon assessed the islands and what lay beneath.

Kana looked at the villages and towns as they got closer, and the locals were running along with the shadow of the airship.

They dropped down, and the ship deployed ropes. The locals grabbed the ropes and pulled them until the airship was in position on a landing zone, and the ropes were tied off.

Koa spoke from behind her. “We are here. It’s time to set foot on our soil.”

She turned and smiled. “Great.”
