“Oh, that explains the crowd.”

The queen asked slyly, “Did you have an interest in any of them?”

“Me? Nope. My dragon? Yes.” Kana smiled. “But until she shows up, she doesn’t get a vote.”

The queen smiled slightly. “If you think so. Aiona, Kalei, please check on the feast. I want our newest addition to the island to get a good impression of us.”

The two young ladies smiled and scampered off through a distant hallway.

“How old are you, Your Majesty?”

“Ah, nearly two hundred. I am trying to find a woman to continue to lead and fend off colonists. How is it that you speak our language?”

Kana paused. “I am not sure. I think she is doing it for me.”

“Ah, interesting.”

“What is interesting, Queen Keonelani?”

“Dragons choose where they want to nest.”

“She just wants to nest in a volcano.”

“We have those.” The older woman laughed. “Help me to my feet, and we will take a walk before the feast.”

“Oh. All right.” She stood straight and helped the queen to her feet. They walked slowly with the guards behind them.

The queen directed her to a wide room that had panels hanging from ceiling to floor. The queen pointed at the first one that showed the founding of the island by human travellers, and then dragons and shifters integrated, and they were able to defend the islands against all comers.

As the queen explained the images, Kana could almost see them moving. They went through the history of great chiefs, kings, and queens as they got exposure to the world outside of the islands.

When dragons arrived from the capital, they made an agreement to pay in return for being a rest point for diplomats trying to reach Asia. Different Asian diplomats had made the same arrangements, and the islands were a touchpoint in the middle of the ocean where agreements were made and sealed in a very private environment with limited communications.

The population melded, and while those who moved stayed, their children were powerful and came and went, reversing the flow and putting island representatives into the world.

There had been four male chiefs and three female monarchs in the four hundred years. The locals had a good lifespan, and the dragons and shifters had obviously joined the bloodlines fairly early on, but now the appearance was uniform for the most part. The islanders were a united community. Well, except for Koa.

“So, Koa’s family is new?”

“His father is the most recent ambassador. He met his wife at a public event, and his dragon locked on. It was a social incident between our communities, but it was sorted, and we got to keep the father as long as any children were offered to Japan for service. Koa did his time, but the islands call everyone home, and now, he travels for us.”

“May I ask why they were in the capital?”

She chuckled. “Lady Trin contacted us and offered us assistance in living with the lava. They drew up the contract for your research services, and the men were authorized to head north.”

“Why were there so many dragons and shifters on the airship?”

The queen laughed and patted her hand. “We are hoping to bait your dragon into staying.”

“Bait?” She remembered Kabyl’s lectures about romance. “Oh. Right. Well, that explains her muttering.”

“Who, dear?”

“The dragon. No one has seen her yet, but she’s really close. My skin feels a little tight sometimes.”

“Does she know how to emerge?”

“Yes. We walked through it, and my trainer’s dragon touched her to explain the procedure.” Kana smiled. “I am pretty sure I can do it when the time comes.”
