“So, which one of them do you prefer?” There was a sly tone that made Kana stare at the monarch.

“Me? None. She is the one with preferences.”

“So, she has picked one.” The queen chuckled.

“Yes, but it has been instilled in me that mutual interest will make a match. A one-sided event is not appropriate and leads to infidelity.”

“Very sensible, but the dragons decide. So, who is she interested in?”

Kana blushed and looked at the guards who were in earshot. “I would rather not say. It will come to nothing.”

“That is up to me and your Lady Trin.”

“I don’t get a vote?” Kana blinked.

“If your dragon wants it, she will have it.”

Kana cocked her head. “What if someone else wanted him first?”

“A power differential will be determined, and the strongest dragoness will have her mate.”

“Wait. Don’t the guys get a vote?”

“If a female approaches them and they don’t want her, they are to make that clear and send her off to another that she may fit with better.”

“Oh, well, that’s nice.”

“It is, now come. Everyone should be settled, and I want you sitting next to me.”

“How do I sit in this dress?”

“Kneel or cross your legs and pull your knees into the dress. Clothing is worn for social concerns, and we have enough manners to keep our gazes to ourselves. Also, we sit at low tables, so don’t worry about anything showing. Your dress is not precisely flattering, so you are fairly safe on that side.”

“Thank you. What are the garlands?”

“Lei. They are for welcomes, farewells, and congratulations.” The queen sighed. “You should have had many more.”

“The ladies were busy.”

“With what?”

Kana swallowed. “Koa.”

The woman laughed and took her hand. “That would do it. He has been missed.”

“He is courting someone?”

“No. Several are courting him.” She laughed as they walked. “I am guessing I should add another name to the roster?”

“No. I don’t... that is something I will deal with later.”

“You will deal with it when she decides the time is right. They are particular. My dragon decided that she wanted Haikili, and he took a while to come around.” She chuckled as they exited the chamber.

Kana gasped as she looked over a dark court filled with pools of light, long tables, and the scent of food. “But it was light when we went in there.”

“The sun falls into the ocean quickly. Look up.”

Kana looked up and gasped. “Wow. Gorgeous. You are lucky to live here. With Kabyl, I saw the aurora borealis.”
