When Koa said, “This fish is better hot.” She extended her hand and warmed the fish up.

“There you go.”

He grinned and took the serving fork, bringing a serving of fish to her small plate.

She was about to put it in her mouth when she had to ask, “So, who is the lady whose gaze is trying to peel my skin off?”

Koa paused and mumbled around his fish, “Ah, that is Mai. She’s a fog dragon and very proud of her reach.”

“She wants you.”

He coughed. “I suppose she does.”

“I see.” She looked at the woman with light gold skin and straight black hair. “She isn’t from around here?”

“No. She has been sent here from Japan to try and secure a match between us. I believe she considers you a rival.”

“I don’t know the first thing about creating a relationship.”

He looked at her. “What does your dragon say?”

The dragon muttered, Mine. He’s mine. Ours. Whatever. Keeping him. Perfect.

Kana looked at him and answered. “She says you are perfect and hers. Ours. Don’t believe her. She liked the poi by itself.”

Koa’s skin darkened, and he nodded. “Mine has similar sentiments about you. From the moment we met.”

She blinked. “Oh.”

“Right. Oh. Mai has had a clear run and authorization from my family. I don’t suppose you have a frightening family somewhere?”

She grinned. “I do, but I am doing these things on my own. It all has to wait until my dragon comes out to play.”

He looked at her. “I will wait.”

“Why? You don’t even know me.”

He smiled. “You have an honest face.”

She laughed and reached past him to get some of the smoked fish. “Thank you.”

She looked out at the sea of faces, and aside from Mai and others who were not native to the island, everyone was slightly curious and not hostile.

He spoke softly. “The couple on the far left, next to the girls, are my parents.”

“Oh. Right. Hey, I have met those girls.”

“Yes, I recognize my sisters’ handiwork around your neck and head.”

She touched the flowers. “Your sisters?”

“Yes. I am the eldest of three children.”

“Nice. I am both an only child and one of four.”

He blinked.

She washed her hands and smiled.
