The performers lined up directly across from them, and Kana stared wide-eyed at the dancers. It was quite the performance, and it was rather heartwarming to see how happy the community was to have their dragons and shifters home.

Chapter Eleven

Kana sat up and made her bed. She could hear the sounds of the house waking up, and today was the day she would get to see the volcano firsthand.

She got dressed in the black dress from the night before and went to the bathroom to wash her face. She could do it with a wave of fire, but people trusted water more.

With focus, she walked toward the sounds of people calmly cooking. She bowed at the entrance. “Excuse me. Where might I find something to eat?”

An older woman came to her and said, “We are just making some rice, but here is a piece of fruit. That should keep you until it is ready.”

“Any dried fish?”

“Oh. Certainly.” The woman beckoned her to follow, and Kana went to grab three large pieces of fish. She thanked the woman and wandered out of the community building, walking toward the coast where she could see the volcano.

She chewed slowly and stared then finished the fruit. Kana could feel the pull and pulse of the magma below the surface. She hadn’t manipulated anything that she couldn’t see yet. She loved the challenge.

Koa looked around the eating hall and couldn’t see Kana.

Mai sauntered up to him. “Koa, I haven’t spoken to you since your arrival.”

“I have been busy.” He stepped past her, and one of the ladies from the kitchen smiled and waved him over.

“If you are looking for that young lady you were sitting with last night, she got some dried fish and fruit and left.”

“When?”

“Over an hour ago. She wakes early.”

He lifted his head and said, “Excuse me.”

Mai grabbed his arm and said, “Koa, we need to talk. I have asked my father for a dispensation, and we can marry now.”

Koa looked at her. “I have told you before, my dragon does not match yours. He doesn’t want you.”

She dug her nails into his arm. “I don’t care. I want you, and I am the ranking dragoness on the island, which means I get you.”

Koa sighed. “No. You are no longer second to the queen. Kana is a handmade of the diamond dragon. She outranks you by just existing.”

Mai stared. “What?”

“My dragon and hers are forming agreements. The attraction is mutual.” He knew Kana would be mortified, but the urge to get Mai away from him was intense. “Now, excuse me. The team is waiting for her, so I have to retrieve her.”

Mai seethed, and fog began to billow in, covering the interior of the house.

Koa growled. “Stop it.”

She smirked and pulled in heavier fog. “Let’s see if she can have you if she can’t find you.”

Kana’s dragon alerted, and she turned back toward the longhouse. Columns of fog were writhing and coiling out of the building, and the thick concealment soon turned the area into a white mass.

Kana got up and radiated heat, running toward the house. She didn’t think this was normal. When she got to the edge of the fog, she poked it and confirmed it was normal vapour. That was easy.

The wave of heat was just enough to take out the mist and literally clear the air. Some villagers were on the ground, others were hanging on to posts, and still more were holding onto each other. Kana raised her hands and flushed the last of the fog out. When she saw another tendril forming, she followed it to its source. Mai was standing with Koa and smirking.
