“Excuse me. You are making people uncomfortable, and the concealment is dangerous. You could hurt someone. Please cease.”

Mai turned to her, and clouds of fog appeared. “Beg me.”

Kana knew that was what she should do, but the expression on the woman’s face indicated that escalation would not solve anything. Hot, dry air swirled around Mai, and her fog disappeared. She crossed her arms. “Begging lacks dignity. Let me know when you need a break. I can hold this all day.”

Mai gasped and kept trying to start her fog, and then she turned red and collapsed.

Koa leaned forward, but Kana shook her head. “Don’t. I just dried her out. I will take care of her.”

She walked to Mai, picked her up with an arm around the waist, and walked out of the building with her. She carried her to a rocky stand near the coast and settled Mai down carefully.

The moist air woke Mai, and she opened her eyes and growled. “Where is Koa?”

“Why? I am the one that made you all crunchy.”

“How dare you touch me!”

“How dare you endanger the people just trying to get breakfast? You are dangerous and not in a good way.” Kana cocked her head. “You are being a rude visitor. Very rude.”

“I am a lady of the imperial court. I cannot be rude.”

“You can, and you are. There are seniors here. Children. Pregnant women. People who could be seriously hurt by falling off steps or crashing into walls.”

“So?”

“So, you would be responsible, and the queen might take action.”

“She’s the island dragon. She can’t do much.” Mai sneered.

“Well, then, it’s me who will kick your ass or burn you to ash. Your choice.” Kana crossed her arms. “Do you want that?”

“No.”

“What was that? Use your manners.”

Mai gritted her teeth. “No, Lady Kana.”

“Excellent. Now, don’t endanger the population, and you won’t be in danger. It is a fair system. Are we clear?”

“Yes, lady.”

“Nice. Talk to you later. I get to run through a volcano today.”

Kana looked around and found Koa and the guys waiting for her forty feet away. She wandered over to them and smiled. “Volcano time?”

Koa nodded. “Did you deal with her?”

“Yes, but she is going to try something. She’s shifty.” Koa smiled. “She also has a column of hot air circulating around her feet that will alert me if there is any sudden rise in humidity.”

“How did you learn how to do that?” Amanu frowned.

“My apprenticeship with the frost dragon was very comprehensive. Her people hunt.” Kana rubbed her hands together. “So, can we get going?”

They looked surprised and then nodded. To her surprise, there was a low vehicle with an open top that they all settled in, and it silently glided across the grass, heading toward the visible glow of the lava field attached to the mainland by a thin walkway of stone.

Kana got up the moment that they stopped and walked toward the pathway. “What do you need it to do?”

“Go out to sea. Do not direct it toward the mainland,” Alanu confirmed, and Akamu nodded.
