Kana took a few more steps toward the black, orange, and red glow.

Koa said, “Be safe. We will call you back when the monitors register a drop in the pressure.”

She chuckled. “If this dress isn’t rated for fire, I might need something to wear when I finish playing.”

They looked at her in surprise, and she took off her shoes and ran barefoot to the molten stone.

Her hair lifted, and the dress smouldered and then burst into flame. She giggled and sprinted across the field, glowing as bright as the rock beneath her.

She stood on the edge of the solidified stone and focused on where the bulges and pressure points were under the pool beneath her feet.

Kana felt alive. Brightly, wonderfully alive. She whispered to the volcano, and it just showed her stress. She took a deep breath, raised her hands, and sent a lancing bolt of plasma through the wall of the pool. It began to drain slowly. She scampered around and repeated the move on the other side, draining the lava low and into the water.

Steam and boiling water began, but she had created wide enough openings under the surface to keep them open as the water tried to cool them.

Kana sat down on the rock and watched the tumble of crimson and orange into the water. An island was forming.

She got up, stretched and looked skyward. “Oh dear.”

The sun was setting.

She walked toward the bridge to the mainland and smiled, closing her eyes and pulling an actual bridge of rock between the two. She walked back to the watchers and smiled. “I learned a lot.”

Koa held fabric out and wrapped her once before tying it firmly. “So, you burn through your clothing.”

“This was my first time being free with the fire. It was lovely.”

She looked to Akamu. “When can I do more?”

He slowly smiled. “We are creating a list of locations now that we have seen you in action.”

“Why is everyone else here?”

Alanu smiled. “They wanted to see the lava pool receding.”

She ran her hands over her hips and looked at Koa. “Thanks for the wrap.”

He smiled. “While I enjoyed seeing all of you, I thought you would be upset by the exposure.”

Kana shrugged. “Not really. Wearing clothing was a skill I had to be taught. It did not come naturally.”

He grinned and rubbed his thumb across her cheek.

Her breath caught in her chest. His eyes went black, and she noted that his dragon was looking out at her. “Oh, hello.” She smiled and waved at him.

He nodded and leaned forward to press his cheek to hers. There was a hum that came from him, and it woke her own dragon. The hum was returned.

He cuddled her against him, and she just flattened her hands on his chest.

She heard a shriek. “Get your hands off him!”

Kana peeped around his shoulder and saw Mai running toward her, her eyes glowing with fury.

Following what Kabyl had taught her, she ducked under Koa’s arm, took a few long strides, caught Mai with a grip around her neck, lifted her, and slammed her to the green grass, holding her down with one hand.

“Stone beats fog.” Kana looked down at her. “Now, what is your problem?”

Mai twisted under her hand, and the woman flailed, choking and slapping at Kana’s arm.
