Alanu cleared his throat. “Perhaps she can’t breathe.”

“Oh.” She released her grip slightly, and Mai inhaled sharply. “There you go.”

Kana looked at her. “I believe both of us have indicated that our dragons are enthusiastic about getting familiar with each other.”

“He’s mine. I am the dominant dragon. He’s mine.”

“You are not, and he isn’t.” She used a tactic that Kabyl had taught her with drunks. “Now, you need to make a new decision. You have picked a fight you can’t win, and you are trying to take on a man who doesn’t want you. No one holds it against you. We are all looking for the one who matches our needs, but two hundred years is a long time to live with someone who doesn’t want or respect you.”

Mai slumped. “You can get off me now; I won’t fight again.”

Kana looked at her. “You know that you are lying.”

Mai blinked. “How do you...”

“You have a certain set to your features.” Kana stood up, and Koa took her by the shoulders and pulled her back.

Steam billowed behind them, and Kana sighed. “So, I am going to have to find something to eat. I got distracted.”

Koa stroked her arms and shoulders. “We will tend to that right now.”

The others agreed, and they all got on the transport that softly hummed as it travelled above the grass. Mai and the two ladies who followed her hung back and began walking back to the longhouse.

Kana sighed. “She isn’t going to let this go.”

“No. The queen has tried to dissuade her, but her dragon is fixed on Koa.” Akamu muttered.

“If my dragon has to show up to get her out of here, things will be ugly.”

Akamu chuckled. “You think she will rise for that?”

“She nearly appeared when I was playing with lava. No idea what she would do if someone irritated her.” Kana yawned.

When they arrived at the royal village, Kana yawned her way through the walk back to the house and went toward the kitchen.

Koa took her hand and pulled her to the dining area. “Come on, and sit down. I haven’t seen someone move an element like that before.”

“Oh, Trin says that is because of the call her dragon put out. A lot of strong or forgotten dragons are awake again. Like mine.” She smiled. “And Eltrinia and Kabyl. Kabyl’s waking was a shock. She didn’t need another dragon to wake her. Panic and survival instinct pulled her into waking.”

“That is unusual. Stay here. I will be right back.”

She settled at one of the tables and poured herself a glass of water. She looked around at the people getting ready for dinner. They rotated the chores, and some people just liked cooking. As Koa went to the kitchen, he was stopped by excited people who wanted to know what had happened. He spoke and kept glancing her way.

She smiled and drank another glass of water.

Kana woke with a headache and cursed. “Dang it.”

A woman with long brown hair and light golden skin sat next to her. “So, Kabyl has been contacted, and we have been informed as to your state of health.”

“Who are you?”

The brightest green eyes looked at her, and the woman tucked her hair behind her pointy ear. “I am Melith. Trin sent me to keep you topped up. When your dragon emerges, it will help you keep a balance. At that point, I will leave you to your own devices.”

“You are a healer?”

“I am a few things. Healer is one of them. I am a relative of Elioth’s. Apparently, Trin is pretty fucking strong, as my kind doesn’t make dragons. Yet, here I am with another beast behind my eyes.” She chuckled. “Are you feeling better?”

“I am. Thanks.”
