She looked at their hands, and they just sat there together for the rest of the hour. When Melith returned, she grinned and said, “Would you like to get up? I brought some clothing that has been treated to be impervious to whatever you can do.”

Kana nodded. “Right. Lovely. I look forward to it. I don’t particularly care if I end up naked, but it is going to be awkward if I keep running through clothes.”

Melith whistled and jerked her thumb. “You. Out.”

Koa laughed but left.

Melith took out a folded sheet of glittering black fabric with red and gold trim. “So, you wrap this around you and press four fingers to the trim. It will arrange itself.”

Kana smiled. “Simple instructions. I like it.”

Kana tried to put the wrap on, and when it started to move on her, she froze until things settled.

Melith smiled. “Oh, that’s lovely.”

Kana walked over to the mirror stand and looked at the glittering fabric that hugged her curves and draped to expose half her thigh. “This is nice.”

“Mirbella will be delighted that you think so. She loves making detailed stuff, but simple has its own attractions.” Melith chuckled. “Ready for the formal dinner in your honour?”

“I thought it was to send Mai off.”

“They are combining the events. They certainly do like celebrating.”

Kana smiled. “I look forward to getting used to it.”

Melith linked arms with her, and they headed to the exterior tables. It was time to enjoy a party.

Kana understood why Melith had been sent to her. She was hilarious. She got along with everyone and even joined in the dancing when she was hauled up. There was a lot of laughing and cheering. The only sour face in the house was Mai. Taking her attention affected her sense of decorum, and Melith was very good at drawing attention.

Kana sat next to Koa and clapped and cheered with everyone else. It was definitely a very fun evening, but Kana was glad to return to her bed. Tomorrow, she could go and see how her new islands were coming.

Chapter Twelve

Something’s wrong. Get up! The shriek in Kana’s head got her up and dressed in one move.

She stood and panted, looking around. Fog. Her room was full of fog. “Fuck.” She burned the fog off and walked outside to continue clearing it.

Her dragon sent out a blast of heat, clearing the courtyard to the shoreline. The outline of a dragon with a body in its claws was slithering through the sky.

Oh, hell no. Kana was moving at a run toward the shoreline, and when she got to the water, there were pillars under her feet with every step.

Jump, Kana. The dragon hissed, and Kana jumped.

Fire seared through every part of her body, and wings began to flap. The world looked different as she flew, but she could see the Asian dragon swirling toward an escaping vessel with Koa hanging limp from her claws.

Kana’s dragon screamed, and her wings propelled her forward. The body dropped into the water, and Kana pulled a tower of lava under him, quickly cooling as it rose above the surface. He was supported and obviously unconscious.

Kana’s dragon screamed again, and the fog dragon moved rapidly toward the boat. Stone gripped it, and parts of the ship caught fire. The fog dragon turned slowly and faced her, just in time for Kana to slam into her and send her reeling backward.

Kana caught her in her claws and pulled her skyward. The fog dragon was crying as Kana’s claws burned. Kana threw her upward and caught her in her jaws on the way down, violently shaking as they dropped toward the water. Twenty feet from the water, Kana let her go, and the large body hit the water with a thud.

Kana flew back to Koa, and he was out but breathing. She dipped her claws in water, scooped him up, and flew him back to the shoreline.

A crowd was there, and she set Koa down carefully in Melith’s care then snarled and turned back toward the ship where the crew were pulling a sobbing Mai out of the water.

Kana landed on human feet on the deck. She pulled a badly burned Mai over the railing.

Mai was sobbing, and her eyes were wild with pain. Kana pulled heat from the injuries and said, “Do not even think of coming near him again. She woke to protect him; she fought to keep him. Killing is just the next step. Are you understanding me?”
