Mai nodded. “How? You need another female to bring you out.”

“No. That is no longer the case. The diamond dragon called, and anyone with the possibility is answering. We don’t know the rules. We make new ones.” Kana looked at her. “Are we clear?”

Mai muttered, “I will see you in front of the council for this.”

Kana nodded. “Of course, you will. I have my own points of issue.”

She felt the steps behind her, and the weapon approaching melted into hissing puddles on the ground.

Kana switched to Japanese and said, “Mai has operated against rules of courtship between dragons. She doesn’t get to keep what she sees just because she is powerful. There are more of us out there than you know. Don’t be disrespectful.”

Mai burst into tears. “But he’s nice.”

“Yes. He is nice and polite, but he isn’t yours, and you are definitely not his. Your dragon would not have made his happy, and it would have rippled through your union.”

“Our children—”

“There would be no children. His dragon is highly romantic, not very focused on honour matches. If you had children, they would not have been dragons. Dragons only appear when the match is solid and love is possible. If the two drift apart, the love was still possible. It just didn’t happen.” Kabyl had told her about that one. It was how she still had her mother, biological father, and her dad.

Kana looked at Mai. “Go home. Heal. Look at the first male who asks how you are feeling and ask your dragon what she thinks. And listen. Put your own wants aside and listen to what she needs.”

Mai whispered, “She says you are intelligent, and she knows why he chose you.”

Kana inclined her head. “I am going to leave and remove the tethers holding your ship. Please continue your travels home with my blessing, and call on me if you ever need someone who can negotiate with a volcano.”

“Wait. You don’t want to destroy me?”

“No. Dragon law states that the higher-ranking dragon gets the willing male. Volcano beats fog. But I am willing to help. There hasn’t been one of my kind for thousands of years, but I am here now and willing to help. You know where to find me.”

She reached out and helped Mai stand. “You are young. Make a match that makes your heart sing.”

Kana turned and glared at the crew, and they took a step back. She climbed to the edge of the railing, made sure the dragon was coming, and when she turned Kana’s skin black, she jumped.

Her wings spread, and the tips sizzled against the water before she flew back toward the shore, where the queen was waiting with the occupants of the main house.

Kana shifted back to her human shape and walked toward the queen, going down on one knee in front of her.

Keonelani patted her head. “Welcome to your complete self, Kana Pyrar Pele.”

“Thank you, Your Majesty. We would like to know if Koa is all right?”

The queen smiled. “He is fine. Your friend is an excellent healer. He was heavily sedated.”

“Good. Well, I can fly. That’s a surprise.”

The queen laughed. “You look lovely and ferocious.”

Kana blushed. “Um.”

“She took what was yours.”

The blush got hotter. “I wouldn’t say that. She was kidnapping Koa. I just returned a citizen.”

“Of course, you were, pet. You are turning the sand to glass.”

Kana blinked and focused on removing the heat. “Sorry.”

“It’s fine, dear. Come on. Breakfast is ready, and I believe you have earned it.”
