They walked, and the other dragons, shifters, and humans who make up the queen’s household came with them.

Kana saw bright smiles and was shocked when Koa’s mother rushed up and hugged her.

“Oh, you saved him.”

Kana blushed but kept the heat down. “I just kept him from being kidnapped. I can’t believe she drugged him.”

Koa’s mother, Konane, smiled at her with her island complexion, denoting where he got most of his good looks.

“Is it going to be embarrassing to him?”

The queen smiled. “His mate came for him. Nothing embarrassing about that.”

Konane smiled. “Nothing wrong at all.”

They progressed to the meal. Kana saw the heap of food in front of her seat and blinked. “Uh. I can probably take this down, but it’s a lot.”

Koa sat next to her with a grunt and rubbed his head. “I am sorry that I missed the fight.”

She muttered. “I am not. It was hard enough to keep out of the water without hauling your heavy ass around.”

He laughed, and they washed their hands. The queen and her consort started eating, which was the cue for everyone.

“So, your dragon is out.”

She nodded as she put different items on the leaf mat. “She is. She’s... something.”

“You didn’t kill Mai?”

“No, but I burned her quite a bit. I know dragons heal faster, but it will take a while before she covers the bite marks.”

Koa reached for some of the chopped fruits and put them on her plate. “Thank you.”

“You are welcome. We had just come to an agreement. I would hate to have to find a different dragon to court.”

He nodded. “I would hate that, too. It would have been a long flight home.”

“You wouldn’t have stayed?”

“Only a pregnancy could have forced me to remain with her, and that would not have happened.”

She ate quietly. “I thought she would have to wait for the dragon ball?”

“That is for folks who live on the mainland. Here, we just have ceremonies and register our unions, so I am very happy you got me home. She could easily have had one of her parents push the registration through, whether I was there or not.”

“So, you think they will notice that the ship is wrapped in burn marks?”

“Oh, the queen will get a call. Possibly a visit from Mai’s parents.”

“What fun. I wonder how flammable they are?” She pinched some pork between her fingertips and popped it in her mouth.

“You say that very calmly.”

“Elioth and Kabyl taught me that aggression has its place.”

He nodded. “What else did they teach you?”

“To enjoy books, to understand the importance of supporting your village. To keep people safe so that the next generation can thrive.”
