She stepped back, and her dragon came out and wrapped around her. She let out that thrumming sound and arched her neck.

Koa lifted his own head, and they walked around each other in a circle. She began to overheat and launched skyward.

She looked back, and he was following.

They climbed, dived, and circled each other in the sky. She felt a little wobbly and returned to the central space near the village. She thudded to the ground and then got up on wobbly legs. He landed next to her and transformed back to human form. He walked up to her and wrapped his arms around her.

“Oh. Right.”

She hugged him back and said, “Not that this isn’t nice, but I have had a lot of stuff going on today, and I am about to get suddenly sleepy.”

He chuckled. “I’ve got you.”

She looked up at him and smiled. “Good. Here I go.”

She dropped in his embrace as fatigue from her first day as a proper dragon caught up with her.

Queen Keonelani made the call she had been looking forward to. She asked for the senator’s office and was smiling into the screen when she was put through.

“Your Majesty, to what do I owe the honour?”

“I just wanted to let you know directly that the new dragon, Kana Pyrar Lem, has now been transformed into the volcano dragon, Kana Pyrar Pele. I am officially notifying you that she is engaged to my nephew Koa, and it is going to go fairly fast. Now. Do any of you want to be here for the wedding?”

“Uh, I will ask Trin. I think she might want to bring Eltrinia along for the celebration.”

“Good, then they can arrive quickly.” She grinned. “That will be important because I am fairly sure that Koa will want things accelerated. He just has to help build his home, and then we can have the ceremony.”

“Interesting tradition.”

“Very. Oh, and if the fog dragon’s parents contact you to complain about her being attacked, just ignore it. If she hadn’t tried to steal my nephew, the volcano would not have activated and rattled her around like a wet kitten.”

Senator Lefarge groaned. “Thanks for the warning. Could it have been avoided?”

“No. She sedated Koa and flew off with him. If Kana hadn’t woken, burned off the fog, and seen them, we would be having a very different conversation right now.”

“Why?”

“Because her dragon would have lit that vessel on fire with all hands on deck then plucked Koa out before the flames got him.”

The senator sighed and rubbed his forehead. “It sounds like what Trin did at the ball. Less violence though. For Trin, I mean. It sounds like your Kana is bloodthirsty.”

“She gives in to her dragon immediately. There is a trust that few born dragons exhibit.” Keonelani smiled. “I am very pleased to have her as a new citizen.”

“Citizen? You are keeping her?”

“Try and separate her and Koa. See where she goes. I will transfer her documents to my island. Thank you for the treasure you have given us.”

The senator frowned. “She matched that fast?”

“She did. They are adorable together.” She laughed. “Oh, and she made another island while she was learning to control lava. She is a lovely addition, and we are happy to have her.”

The senator nodded. “I will let Trin know about the upcoming wedding.”

“Thank you.”

“How did you pick the males who met her? I could use some tips.”
