He inclined his head. “In regular society, perhaps, but in the sphere of the diamond dragon, all the rules get bent or broken. Just enjoy it. We are all adapting as things change around us, and I do not adapt easily. I am enjoying the visitors to our home. They keep Creata entertained.”

Trin chuckled. “Creata is one of my oldest friends. How Vasic ended up with her is a mystery.”

“My very good luck.” He chuckled and left them.

Kana sipped at her tea and cocked her head. “He isn’t a dragon.”

“No. Neither is Creata. They are lions.” Trin picked up a tiny sandwich from the tray and nibbled at it.

Kana wandered over and browsed. “I didn’t know it was possible to make friends across species lines.”

“Oh, it’s possible, but it is also a rule that I didn’t know about until long after I met my friends. I started my life as a dedicated human. No trace of dragon in me until Creata’s baby shower when everything broke loose.” She tapped the small mark below her collarbone. “They mark pure humans like this so that they don’t accidentally use magic or anything against us. Protected species on this continent.”

Kana stared at her. “You thought you were human?”

Trin nodded with a grin. “I did. Right up until a dragoness smacked me around at the baby shower, and my dragon woke up.”

“What’s a baby shower?” Kana genuinely wanted to know. It sounded terrifying.

Trin spent the next hour answering her questions patiently and with a lot of laughter. Kana had felt foolish at the beginning, but Trin assured her that there were many details of modern society that were not covered in books. She was going to have to keep her mind open and learn as she went.

When the dark mist that heralded Eltrinia appeared, Kana felt slightly more at ease with the world of people. Trin had answered her questions, no matter now trifling. Those bits of information had been far more soothing to her developing mental state than she would have guessed. She now knew how to hold a teacup, eat a sandwich, and hold a cookie in polite company. She also knew how to stack three different flavours of cookies together to eat them all at once. It had been a fun lesson.

The smoke solidified into Eltrinia, and she smiled. “Are you ready to go?”

Kana nodded. “I am. Thank you, cousin, for the identity and introduction to fashion.”

Trin nodded and sipped at her tea. “It was a pleasure to be here for you, and I hope to be able to meet your sisters soon.”

Kana paused. “Sisters?”

“Sure. We are cousins removed by time and events, but you and the other two in tanks were conceived at the same time and developed at the same time by the same people. That makes you siblings.”

Kana smiled slowly. “I have younger siblings. I will be a big sister. Family is mentioned often in the historical books, as well as fiction. It is a motivating force and an anchoring one. I think it will help.”

Eltrinia blinked. “Apparently, I have missed a few discussions.”

Trin grinned. “Nothing that we can’t discuss another time. Are you ready to get cold?”

Kana cocked her head. “What is cold?”

Eltrinia stared and then nodded. “Right. Of course. Well, it is the lack of heat.”

“What is that?”

Trin chuckled. “You will figure it out. Kabyl will be delighted to introduce you to the concept of cold.”

Kana smiled. “By the sound of the laugh, you are being sarcastic. I am learning to differentiate the sounds.”

Eltrinia chuckled. “She has a very advanced sense of humour. Are you ready to head out?”

Kana nodded. “I am ready. Thank you again, Trin.”

“We will have your new wardrobe delivered when it is ready. Enjoy the learning. Kabyl is good at emergency education.” Trin smiled. “She is just generally great in emergencies, so don’t worry. Whatever you throw at her, she can handle it.”

“I am an emergency?”

Trin walked over and touched her cheek. “You are an event. A wave of power that will wash across the world.”
