Kana’s eyes widened. “I hope not. Sending fire across the world is not a good idea.”

Trin laughed and patted her shoulder. “You are probably right. Eltrinia, you ready?”

“Ready.” Eltrinia had put a cloak on and walked over. “Okay, Kana. I will bring your change of clothing when Trin lets me know it is ready. Prepare to find out what cold is.” She grinned and took Kana’s hand.

The dark coils of djinn vapour wrapped around them, and when they emerged from the darkness, Kana knew one thing for certain. She knew what cold was. It was all around her.

Chapter Four

The first thing she knew was that the heat she had passively enjoyed without even realizing it was missing. Here, the heat of the world was deep underground.

Eltrinia wrapped her in the cloak. “It is a little startling when you first begin to understand what sets you off and wakes you up. Kabyl will explain the reasoning behind putting you here.”

Kana looked around. “Where is she?”

Eltrinia pointed at a white-blue speck in the sky. “She’s up there. You are going to be transported by dragon.”

“Transported how?”

“She will lift you carefully, wrap you in her claws, and the insulated cloak you are wearing will keep her cold from touching your heat. From there, she will take you where she feels it necessary for you to be.” She smiled. “If there is a problem, she can call me or show you how to do it. I am just a few minutes away in an emergency.”

“But if it is me causing the problem, how could you help?”

Eltrinia smiled as the dragon came in for a landing. “I can bring Trin. She can help.”

“How?”

“She is in charge of every dragon on the face of the earth, whether they like it or not. Your dragon will listen to her even if it gets out of your control.”

“Why would it?”

Eltrinia laughed. “Because she is bigger and meaner than it is. That is the way of our beasts.”

Kana cocked her head. “What is your beast?”

“She is too young to change yet, but she is there, watching and waiting. Yours might be the same, but it might also rise tomorrow. No on knows how these things are going to happen.”

Eltrinia walked Kana over to the dragon that was crouched quietly in the snow. Eltrinia’s feet crunched with every step. Kana sank into the white stuff that melted as she took each step. At least she was wearing boots.

The dragon snickered as she got closer and held out her claws. Kana looked at the deadly blades, nodded her farewell to Eltrinia, wrapped herself in the cloak, and stepped into the grip of the dragon.

Eltrinia smiled. “Call me if you need anything, Kabyl. Kana, open your mind and learn all you can. Kabyl is an excellent teacher.”

“Yes, cousin. I will. Thank you.”

The dragon inclined her head toward Eltrinia, wrapped her claws securely around Kana, and launched herself skyward.

The world under them was white with silver trees and dark grey rocks. She was carried through the air for half an hour, the wind biting at her face with invisible teeth.

So, this was what cold was. She was not a fan.

Kabyl landed and set her down carefully before shifting into her human form—a woman with solemn eyes and long white hair tied in a loose braid. She had a bright smile that just reached her eyes. “Hello, Kana.”

Kana followed what Eltrinia had taught her and stuck out her hand. “Hello, Kabyl.”

Kabyl grinned and shook her hand. “Welcome to the northern expanse. I have landed here because it is an ancient crater. You can work out here and try to get a grip on the complete range of your energies.”

“More than the flare of fire?”
