She leaned back and shivered. “I missed you, too. But it’s still chilly out here.”

He grinned. “Well, let’s get you warmed up. Climb on.” He slid her to his back, and she wrapped her arms and legs around him. He walked up and out of the lake, moving carefully on the slippery rock. He didn’t want to drop his precious load. At the cook site, he paused by Erin. “How long until dinner?”

She smiled and winked. “Oh, thirty minutes or so. Maybe a little longer if you need it.”

“Good. Don’t wait on us.” He set off at a jog for their tent, Wiz bouncing on his back, laughing. He set her down at the tent, and turned to hold her close. “That’s my favorite sound in the entire world.”

“What is?” She leaned back against his arms, smiling up at him.

“Your laughter.” He caressed her soft cheek. “For so long, I thought I’d never hear it. Don’t ever stop laughing, Wiz.”

“Don’t worry, I won’t. I’ve got too much lost time to make up for.” She jumped and wrapped her arms and legs around him, kissing him.

They might be late for dinner, but Tom didn’t care. He had the best life in the world: cows, computers, and most importantly, Wiz’s love.
