I felt a swift pass of his magic against me, presumably cleaning the blood off himself. Nakoa rounded on me to look down into my face. His expression was surprisingly neutral, considering I’d basically ruined his hope of reaching full powerandour soulbond vows. He opened his mouth to say something but seemed to wrestle with it for a moment before he finally settled on, “Do you think you’re ready to try flying? If not, I can just carry you.”

My stomach gave a nervous lurch. Heights had never been my strong suit, but I forced the words out anyway. “The sooner, the better, I imagine.”

Nakoa’s brow pinched before his gaze darted to the roof of the inn.

“Try stretching them and giving them a few flaps, then we’ll practice taking off and landing from the roof.”

I nodded, taking a deep breath to steel myself against my nerves. My wings shot out, one of them banging into one of the hitching post poles.“Ow, fuck!”

Nakoa gave a warm belly laugh that, despite the pain that had caused it, alleviated the heavy tension in the air. He gently grabbed my shoulders and eased me out of the vicinity of hard objects. The tenderness in his touch made my traitorous heart squeeze, but I promptly stifled it.

“If you wanted me to carry you the whole way again so badly, you need only ask. No need to go breaking any wings,” he teased.

My brow furrowed.

“Why are you being so nice?”

Chest heaving, he smirked a little bitterly. “Am I that predictable?”

My glare should have reduced him to a husk.

“Well, considering the shit storm that was yesterday… Maybe we couldtryto enjoy the day while it’s still peaceful,” he gestured flippantly towards the marks on my arms, “Since we’re are all about to die, apparently.”

I gave a noncommittal grunt.

“And, you are particularly breathtaking with your wings out…”

I rolled my eyes, ignoring his charming words and gave my wings a heavy flap. I squealed in terror as it launched me a foot off the ground and sent my stomach leaping. Nakoa howled with laughter as he caught me around the waist.

“Easy there,”he purred, “Gently…”

My heart thudded a frantic beat in my chest as I tried to breathe away my fear… And the effect his words were having on me. Still holding onto my waist, he took a step back.

“I’ve got you.”

My hands fisted his biceps as I tried to make my wings give a gentle flap. My heels lifted off the ground, and I came back down, steady on my feet.

“Good girl… Again.”

Two more gentle flaps held me aloft in the air. A sultry grin split Nakoa’s face.

“Akash almighty…You look like some avenging goddess sent from the heavens.”

I forced myself not to preen at the compliment. My wings gave a few more flaps that lifted me another foot in the air and sent my nails digging into his flesh.

“Or hells,according to Phaedra.”

He hummed thoughtfully. “I’d follow you to either.”

There was a tense silence, and I cleared my throat as if it might alleviate it. Nakoa’s fingers gave my waist a squeeze.

“You wanna try making it up to the roof?”

My eyes darted to the roof, only about twelve feet from the ground, but it still had my stomach giving a phantom leap.

“Oh, Gods…”

Nakoa dropped his glamor, wings stretching wide, and took my hands in his.
