“… And shall I, in turn, have all ofyourloyalty?”

Chapter

Thirty-Eight

NAKOA

“Indeed, you shall,” I promised, lips quirking.

Vesper heaved a sigh to accompany the waning of her resistance.

“I have two conditions.”

I shrugged, not having to feign nonchalance. If she did this for us, it would certainly streamline our efforts to overthrow Zurie, and if she chose to stay with us, which I imagined she would, considering she probably no longer had any living relatives, she would become one of us.

“Anything for family.”

She huffed, shaking her head. “We’ll see about that.”

Nodding with no small amount of confidence, my Knowingness told me she would remain.

“As I’m sure you may realize, there are very few of us that survived the war.”

My eyes drifted to Mareina, whose expression revealed absolutely nothing. I had no doubt she had played a significant part in their genocide, and I couldn’t help but worry that Vesper recognized her and would attempt to exact her revenge. Even if it would be an exercise in futility for her. The last thing Mareina needed was more violence wrought against her or more blood on her hands.

“I want you to help me find a mimicryx male.”

I could practically feel the growl Rayne was suppressing in his throat. His darkfriendsseeped into existence beside him, their vapors whirling and tumultuous though their luminous eyes remained fixed on Vesper. My Knowingness had confirmed that she was Rayne’s mate. I couldn’t help but wonder if his shadow beasts were her mates too… What a fascinating event theirjoiningswould be… If such a thing were possible. They certainly had a consciousness all their own. I’d witnessed their individuality and independence of Rayne on too many occasions to take their silence for granted.

“A male?” I asked, though I already knew the answer, “A brother or cousin of yours?”

“No. I need a male so that we can prevent the extinction of my people.”

I studied her for a moment, training my expression to be thoughtful as my gaze slipped momentarily to Rayne. His jaw was clenched, and the hole he seemed to be intent on searing into the side of Vesper’s face finally lifted as his gaze fell to the ground.

Poor male.

I inwardly cursed.

Fuck.

‘Anything for family.’ … Gods, I was an idiot.

“And if we can’t find anyone? Surely you’ve tried already?”

“Of course, I have… But my powers are limited. And this one,” she nodded at Mareina, “Just happens to know the most powerful Seer in all of Atratus.”

So she did recognize her… All the more reason to make her swear her loyalty.

Miroslav.A slew of emotions went through me at the name. He’d slaughtered thousands of my countrymen.

And his own,I reminded myself.

And yet… He had saved my life.Twice.

United me with my soulbound.

My Knowingness whispered to me that there were other things he had done that I wasn’t even aware of, but it remained silent when I pressed it to elaborate.
