“Let me go with you,” I blurted, unsure if he intended to go without me.

“I’ll be back in a matter of minutes,”he whispered against my neck, curling a tendril of my hair around his finger before turning to his mother.

My panic rose swift and cutting now feeling as though maybe my earlier anxiety had been an intuitive warning. For not only Nakoa’s safety but for Malekai’s.

The portal widened, towering above our heads, revealing a homely kitchen with lots of stained wood and brass fixtures.

“Wait, Nakoa?—

Nakoa stepped through with his mother and glanced back at me, his brow pinched, eyes searching mine with something like suspicion, just as it closed.

Could he tell I was worried about another male?

Probably.

My heart thudded a frantic beat as panic rose.

Pomona appeared beside me wearing an encouraging smile.

“Don’t worry, love. He’ll be back before you know it… If that male is anything, it’s determined, and I can already tell that nothing would keep him away from you. Not even Zurie’s army.”

I frowned. I couldn’t help but feel her words were foolish. What was one male against thirty if that was how many Malekai had brought with him. I also couldn’t help but worry for Malekai… If they came toe-to-toe… I wasn’t entirely sure who would win.

Fear speared through me at the idea… Malekai and I had saved one another’s lives more than I could count. He hadalwaysbeen there for me. I could only pray that somehow their paths wouldn’t cross.

Pomona chuckled as if reading my thoughts. Though she only knew half of them. “His power is unlike any other’s.”

I nodded, gulping audibly.

“I know…”

I was grateful for it but also terrified of what it might mean for Malekai and now I felt like a traitor for not having warned either of them… But who’s to say it wouldn’t have sent Nakoa in search of Malekai just to eliminate the competition? If I told Nakoa, would his Knowingness reveal Malekai’s, not at all platonic, love for me. Would it show him visions of all the tender moments Malekai and I had held one another. The countless moments things between us had so very nearly become something…more?Would his Knowingness tell him just how badly I’dwantedto give in but had been too afraid?

While it was long before Nakoa and I had ever met… I’m not sure that he would be reasonable enough in the heat of the moment to take that fact into consideration…

Pomona’s brow furrowed as she tried, and failed, to read my conflicted emotions. I took a deep breath… and a leap of faith.

“I just… Some of those soldiers are good people.”

Pomona frowned, gradually nodding in understanding.

“Are some of them good friends of yours?”

I nodded, the knot in my chest winding impossibly tight. So much so that I felt like something inside me would fucking break.

“One in particular…”

“I’m so sorry…,”Pomona offered softly as she pulled me into her arms. It only served to heighten my panic. I felt like I was going to jump out of my skin.

“What’s his name?” She whispered so softly in my ear it gave me pause. It would have been inaudible to anyone but a sanguinati.

Tears swelled, and my throat seemed to close… If Nakoa and his mother found them on the road to Vyssini…

Had I just doomed Malekai to death?

“…Malekai Theikos.”

“What does he look like?”
