NAKOA

The visit my mother and I took to Vyssini had been brief but efficient. And thanks to Mareina, lives would be saved. I’d warned one of the few leading members who actually knew my identity, and he’d set off to warn the others. Afterwards, we’d portalled to the city's outskirts but had found no sign of Zurie’s soldiers.

“Any news from Val?” Roderick asked.

“Only that our numbers are steadily increasing… And that he has a male on the inside.”

Their jaws collectively dropped.

“… What do you mean on the inside? Like… Inside, inside? Inside the palace? Or someone in her army?”

I shrugged. “He couldn’t say… Said his secrecy was sworn in blood. Just that it’s someone who he…we… can trust.”

My brothers and sister grew silent for several moments.

“Well, that’s… Promising. Perhaps we should include Val so we can gain access to his contact. Would be a significant advantage to have another one of Zurie’s own to get us inside the palace.”

“How do we know he’s not a mole?”

“Get him to swear his fealty.”

“Val said he doesn’t even have a way to contact him… Said that he has to wait to hear from him first.”

Lokus grunted thoughtfully. “Highly suspect…”

“Indeed. Another reason I didn’t tell him about our plan to infiltrate Zurie’s palace.”

“Heisnormally a rather good judge of character.”

I gave a noncommittal grunt. As accurate as Lokus’ words may be…

After several moments of thoughtful silence, Lokus finally picked up a bottle of amber liquid and poured refills into our glasses.

“To Zurie being reduced to fucking ash and you,” Lokus said proudly, “Becoming fucking King.”

King.

You and your soulbound are destined to liberateallof Atratus,my Knowingness whispered.

All I’d ever wanted was for me and my people to no longer live oppressed in exile on this twisted fucking continent. To liberate the Kahlohani Islands of the fae that now plagued its land and seas, and live in fucking peace… And while I wanted that foreveryone…And I was viciously pursuing the crown… Sometimes, insecurity still gripped me.

Who was I to lead an entire Kingdom?

I was a broken warrior who had lost a war and had been reduced to little more than a thief and a murderer.

Sometimes, I really wondered who was planning all of this…

Akash?

Moirai, the three-faced goddess of fate?

Rayne, Lokus, and Roderick raised their glasses as Vesper watched, looking mildly intrigued.

After a moment’s hesitation, I raised mine.

“To Zurie’s death and all the peace it will bring.”

Lokus pinned me with a knowing gaze as if he’d seen right through me.
