“Are you speaking in terms of general practicality or something specific from your visions?”

“Both.”

My frustration flickered. Apparently, my mother wasn’t the only one leaving me out of the loop.

“Anything that I’m privy to?”

Miroslav and my mother’s eyes met in a wordless exchange.

“There will always be outside threats. Ishra, Hades, and Maimyo mo Qì are only days away by boat. There are also other realms to consider. Just as Zurie’s ancestors arrived and colonized these lands, another more advanced race of beings could arrive at any time. None of this is new information to you.”

“… No, it is not, but surely, if you have visions of such a thing, it would be wise to make us aware of them so that we may prepare accordingly, no?”

Miroslav appeared entirely nonplussed. “Surely.”

I narrowed my eyes at his nonchalance. My mother, recognizing that my temper was wearing thin, shifted in her seat uncomfortably.

“I have to say, not that I would readily trust you with the role, but I’m rather surprised you’re not interested in taking Zurie’s place on the throne, considering you’re clearly the most eligible after all your years of service as Royal Advisor and Seer… Accompanied with your formidable powers, No one could challenge you.”

Miroslav gave us a frustratingly understated, enigmatic smile that was painfully similar to the one my mother deferred to when I was asking something only she had the answer to.

“Despite the fact that I have no desire to bear that burden, before Zurie hired me, she made me swear a blood vow thatIwould never attempt to take her throne, become King, or harm her.”

I lifted my brows, urging him to elaborate.

“That’s a rather fine line you’re dancing on with that last one, Miroslav.”

He gave me a tight smile.

“I would die a thousand deaths if it meant protecting your mother. What is one death if it saves both her and the realm?”

My heart stalled in my chest…Oh gods.

My eyes dipped to my mother leaning further into his side as though needing to hold onto him to prevent such a thing from happening. As much disdain as I might personally hold for the male… I would never wish the pain that comes from losing one’ssoulboundon my mother.

“When?”

“That all depends on you.”

My jaw dropped.

“What?”

“On how much you and Mareina require my intervention when it comes to overthrowing Zurie…”

Right. So, no pressure.

Chapter

Forty-Three

MAREINA

My appetite dried up after finding out that if Nakoa and I couldn’t overpower Zurie ourselves, Miroslav would be forced to step in, and he would die because of it…

That male I had hated for nearly a century had done so much to protect his mate, Nakoa, their family, and all of Atratus… Potentially the entire Bellorum Realm if what he previously implied was accurate…

A grim resolve rooted deep inside me as I sat there, unable to listen to anything more during dinner. Whatever happened when we infiltrated Zurie’s palace, we wouldnotrely on Miroslav.
