“There’s someone you should meet…”

Nakoa strode toward me, eyes already black, though he’d managed to keep his glamor in place, which… had to be a good sign, surely.

“This is my… soulbound. Nakoa.”

The words tasted like ash, and the look on Malekai’s face just about tore my heart out. I forced one of my hands away from Malekai’s arm to rest a hand on Nakoa’s shoulder to try and placate him. Malekai’s eyes dipped to check forsoulboundmarks he wouldn't find.

“Nakoa, this is Malekai..."

And thanks to Nakoa's visions and Knowingness, he was already well aware of who he was to me. Though I wasn't about to instigate matters by proclaiming my love for him right now.

"... My closest friend and ally," I finished.

The heat of Nakoa’solana kah’hei’scollective gaze felt as if it would burn a hole straight through me. Malekai’s throat worked on a rough swallow before gradually nodding and extending his hand towards Nakoa.

Nakoa’s hands fisted at his sides as his gaze fell to Malekai’s hand. Tension coiled tight in the moment before he finally took Malekai’s hand.

Silence weighed heavily in the air as their hands moved up and down in a mechanical motion for a painful amount of time. I couldn’t help but wonder what in the gods' names his Knowingness was whispering to him.

Val approached, bless him, and clapped both males on the shoulder. Finally, breaking the tension.

“This is the lad I was telling’ yew about last night... The ally on theinsidethat I mentioned.”

The shock that Malekai was even here finally registered.

My gaze sought Pomona, who was already intently staring at me. With everyone’s attention focused on me, Malekai, and Nakoa, she finally acknowledged me. She shrugged, lifting her brows as if to say, your guess is as good as mine.

“The soldiers… at the town square… That was you?” Nakoa asked, his brow tense.

Malekai gave a short nod.

Nakoa’s brow tightened.

Val squeezed their shoulders, pushing them both up the stairs, before throwing me a look over his shoulder.

“What the fuck was that?”He mouthed silently to me.

I gently grabbed Pomona’s arm to pull her aside as Famei, Rayne, Vesper, and Roderick followed them into the cabin.

“What happened last night?” I whispered when they’d all retreated inside.

She blew out a breath, shaking her head as we stepped further away from the cabin. “Nothing, other than attempting to thoroughly interrogate me as to where you were and to provide evidence of your safety. He agreed not to attack any of The Uprising Members. Didn't say anything about... all ofthat.”

“Did you tell him about Val?”

She reared back. “Akash,no.”

I paced anxiously, wondering what in the fuck was actually happening.

Had he been a part of this the whole time?

Surely, not…

Malekai’s words echoed in my mind…“Want me to just kill her for you, and then we can watch the world burn together?”

Pomona’s brows pinched with a hint of suspicion and deep concern. “I don’t mean to pry, but… Just how close are you two again?”

I sighed, feeling the weight of my emotion crush my chest.
