Pomona handed the other ice pack toMalekai…Mysoulbound’sbest“friend”,apparently. Her best friend who had only had her best interest in mind…

Gods damn it.

I was such a cunt.

Since the male had appeared, my Knowingness had been whispering information to me about him. No small portion of which was the fact that he was in love with mylohane thili.Had saved her life on numerous occasions throughout the war. Just as she had for him… That was an unbreakable bond.

While my own bond with Mareina was… fraying.Rapidly.

The fact that he, too, had fought on the wrong side of it with her only further fuelled the flames of my ire.

But he saved her life. If it weren’t for him, she would have died during the war, and you would never have met your soulbound,my Knowingness chose to remind me. Again.

Jealousy, guilt, and gratitude all warred within me.

Finally, I stepped forward to where the male sat, leaning against Val’s wall, icing the cut beneath his swollen brow.

The words felt like shards of fucking glass coming out, but it had to be done.

“I’m sorry.”

Malekai lifted his gaze to mine, nodding in acceptance. “I apologize as well… I could have been?—

“No, you’re right… It’s risky sending Mareina in there with Vesper alone to face Zurie.”

I slid down the wall to sit next to him, draping an arm on my bent knees as I iced my swollen eye, which was healing remarkably fast, thanks to my and Mareina’s bond. Pomona, the angel she is, was alreadywillingaway the disaster we’d made and mending the things we’d destroyed.

A woman with white and blonde hair, golden skin, and turquoise eyes screams her pain and fury onto the tile floor on which her bloodied cheek is pressed. The veins in her forehead and neck bulge as a Kahlohani warrior pins her to the ground as he pounds into her brutally from behind.

“You should have stayed in Hades, where your kind belongs.”

As always, the vision left as abruptly as it came. When Malekai’s face was replaced with hers, I could see the likeness is undeniable… My gut churned with a guilt that doesn’t belong to me, and yet…

A Kahlohani soldier raped his mother.

Malekai’s blood-crusted brow is pinched as he studies me warily. Thanks to my visions, it has become no small task to live two realities simultaneously, however brief, and not seem… crazy.

Before Malekai can ask any questions, I continue, trying my best to seem normal despite what I've just witnessed.

“Vesper swore her loyalty in a blood vow… Just to assuage your concerns with that… And according to my visions, along with Miroslav’s, and my mother’s scrying… Mareina overcomes Zurie quickly thanks to Vesper’s distraction…”

I turned my throbbing head to gauge Malekai’s reaction… And just as I’d suspected, not a flicker of surprise revealed itself at the mention of Miroslav.

Malekai gradually nodded. “Well, that’s reassuring and all… But… I can't allow her to go in there withjustVesper.”

It's no small blow to my ego and my conscience that this male is more protective about mysoulboundthan I have been... Begrudgingly, I appreciate that fact.

“No one else, other than Miroslav, can enter the palace… And he’s promised to be there with her, but his blood vow to not cause any physical harm to Zurie doesn’t exactly inspire confidence.”

Malekai’s expression pinched as though I were daft.

“I’m going to go with her.”

I returned his daft expression.

“I’m sure Zurie is already well aware of your betrayal…”

Malekai shook his head. “No… Miroslavfoldedme and ten of my soldiers who have been vowed to secrecy back to the palace to tell Zurie that the rest of them were killed… He was the one who folded me here… He told me about Val the night before my soldiers and I left Vyssini.”
