“Oy. I can’t tell if you two are about to fight again or fuck, but it’s getting late, and I don’t feel like setting up camp in the dark.”

Gradually, my gaze drifted up to meet Lokus. Malekai stood and made his way to Val and Pomona, offering an apology, before exiting the cabin to follow mylohane thilioutside.

Lokus offered me a hand to pull me to standing, blowing out a breath as he clapped me on the back.

“That was a pretty decent fight, brother…”

I rolled my eyes. “You bet against me again?”

He gave me a crooked grin. “Hey, there’s gotta be someone out there that can hand you your ass.”

“I’ll be damned if I let it be that pretty fae fucker.”

He nodded in understanding. “Seems pretty keen on your Mrs.”

My jaw tightened as anger sparked anew, and I took a deep breath.

“Yeah, well… The more protection Mareina has when she faces Zurie, the better.”

Chapter

Forty-Eight

MALEKAI

The moment I stepped outside, that painful knot in my chest tugged me toward where it somehow knew Mareina would be, even if I couldn’t see her. Twilight would soon descend, bathing us in that haunting, ethereal blue. I found her standing alone beside a babbling creek some distance from Val’s.

“Do you feel better now?” She asked without even having to glance back to know it was me.

It had always felt good to fight and blow off a little steam, and she knew it.

“A little?” I admitted.

She gave a soft huff before finally turning to face me, peering up at my healed face. “Let’s see the damage.”

I willed a barrier around us to cloak us from sight and any prying ears, closing the distance between us as her hands reached out to examine my face.

I remained silent, studying her as she scrutinized my remaining scratches. Since the day I’d laid eyes on her, thanks to Seline, her former loverwho had introduced us, Mareina had been the most beautiful female I’d ever seen. Her beauty wasn’t soft and tender… Nor was it conventional. While her features would be considered alluring and ethereal by any standard… There was a hardness to them that lacked a feminine grace. Particularly in her expression. Which only made the tiny glimmers of softness and fragility inside that she revealed to me all the more beautiful. Or those rare moments of joy… Those rare smiles.

Sweet fucks, how her smile brought me to my knees.

Not to mention the secrets lying beneath her fighting leathers… Strength and power in her lithe muscle, layered with soft feminine curves… Made me fucking salivate.

My eyes locked onto the pillowy cupid’s bow of her lips until she caught me and grinned, rolling her eyes.

“You’re lucky he didn’t wield his magic.”

My brow pinched. “He’slucky I didn’t wield my magic.”

She sighed, turning away from me back towards the creek.

“Malekai… I’ve seen him steal the air from someone’s lungs… Burst their blood vessels within their bodies… He wields power over elements unlike any other I’ve witnessed before.”

My brows lifted.

Admittedly, that was an impressive gift.

Lucky for me, I wasn’t quite as susceptible to anyone else’s magic in the same way most wielders were, minorior not. Just as you couldn’t wield a pairing knife against a broadsword and expect to win, the magic most fae and other immortals used wasn’t nearly substantial enough to do any significant harm to me. It was one of the reasons I’d survived the war and had led my soldiers to victory in every battle, even without Miroslav’s help.
