My soulbound included.

Roderick and Val had already begun peeling their clothes off, shifting into their Lykos forms. On all fours, their heads still reached Nakoa’s chest. Rayne’s demeanor was relaxed, though his dark shadows curled around and beside him restlessly as they began to solidify into tall, sentinel-like beings with glowing eyes, long claws, and sharp teeth. The hairs on my arms lifted as I felt them returning my gaze before drifting to Vesper, who was openly staring at them, lips parted.

Pomona gave me a winsome grin, foldingin front of me as if to remind me that she could do such a thing. She gave me a tight squeeze, murmuring in my ear. “Be careful, new sister.” She kissed my cheek before folding back to Famei, who smiled. His golden, yellow eyes glowing brightly.

Lokus gave an exaggerated yawn, patting his mouth.

“I’ll send Miroslav for you at the tunnel entrance inside the palace as soon as it's done.Akashbe with you.”

Nakoa gave me a short nod. “See you on the other side.”

He turned, leading the way in the darkness, and I shut the hidden door behind them as I promptly shoved away the hurt burning through our tether.

It felt like our fate had been sealed right along with it, and there was no way to know if that was a good or bad thing.

I could potentiallydiedoing this, and that’s all he had to say?

The soothing heat of Malekai’s hand, at least a few degrees warmer than anyone could naturally be, slid over my shoulder. My magic felt as though it was purring in response - the first occasion since I’d fed from my parent’s blood that soothed the tension in my body and my magic, which I could feel coiled tight and ready to strike.

“Ready, tessari mú?”

I nodded, meeting his gaze. “Are you?”

A soft smile perched on the corner of his unfairly perfect mouth.

“As long as I’m beside you -always.”

My eyes slid shut briefly, taking comfort in those words. And praying that no harm would come to him on this utterly insane endeavor.

When I opened my eyes, I looked past him to Vesper, who was openly staring at us with curiosity. Though I found no judgment beneath it.

“And how are you feeling?”

She seemed surprisingly relaxed.

“A little unsettled about pretending to be a corpse, but other than that… Ready to get this the fuck over with.”

NAKOA

My skin felt as if it might burst. Nearly as intensely as my shoulders ached for my wings and magic to be unleashed. Not only for what we were about to do but also for having had to part ways with Mareina while she faced Zurie. As necessary as it was, considering giving Zurie ‘my corpse’ would yield the least messy result so long as we managed to pull this off. I was shocked by the intensity of my genuine gratitude and relief that Malekai was with her.

Rayne’s beasts led the way, slithering against the walls as we strode down the tunnel that seemed more like an endless, yawning chasm with no end. More than thirty minutes had passed by the time the barest sliver of light could be seen peaking from beneath a door in the distance. The entire time, my heart pounded a deafening beat in my ears as I could only guess how Mareina was faring. If Zurie was dead yet.

The hairs on the back of my neck rose, and my steps slowed as we approached, and myolana kah’heiwalked ahead of me.

Still wielding the ball of fire in one hand, instinct had my free hand reaching for the hilt of my sword.

I half expected a vision to overtake me, but instead, I turned to find a female dressed in a pale grey gown with silver hair and dark skin. She grinned wide at me, revealing a delicate set of fangs. Her voice a husky purr.

“Hello.”
