My eyes suddenly stung at her whispered words. So quiet they were barely audible, even to me.

“You were so beautiful, my precious darling… I’m so sorry.”

Oh, gods…

My throat worked to stifle emotion.

Kill her, my instincts whispered urgently.

Though his eyes burned with intent, Miroslav’s face held zero expression as he met my gaze.

I knew then and there I didn’t have the heart tomurderNakoa’s mother. Not without him knowing the truth.

NAKOA

Idrew my dagger, swiftly pressing it against the female’s throat as she folded us into what I could only assume was one of the guest bedrooms in Zurie’s palace. Her reaction was neither one of shock nor offence. Instead, she merely grinned from ear to ear. She looked…young.Young enough to be in her twenties. Though that meant nothing. She could quite possibly be hundreds of years older than me. Her heart-shaped face was framed by long swathes of silvery waves that spilled over her delicate shoulders. Bright grey eyes, wide and doe-like, were made even more striking by her dark skin as she looked up at me from her petite but curvy stature. Her head only reached my chest.

“I mean you no harm. Just wanted to have a little chat in private…Your Highness.”

My glare would have caused a lesser spirit to crumple as I pressed the blade harder against her throat. A trickle of blood dripped over the edge and onto the low neckline of her pale dress.

“You have about four seconds before I remove your head.”

“My name is Thalia. Princess Thalia Attía of Ishra. I wish to ally with you.”

Her reply only served to make my hackles rise further.

How the fuck did she know?

“I have a great number of other allies, all of whom possess rather extraordinary gifts… I’ve been watching you for quite some time.”

I scowled, finally removing the blade from her throat. She swept a finger over the blood dripping from her neck and the top of her breast, licking it from her fingertip.

Whatever war was destined to come to our doorstep, having allies from the continent would be exceedingly advantageous. Ishra’s King was the descendent of a demiurge. Several generations back, and had now been mixed with various other powerfulwieldingraces, but even so, the male would be exceedingly powerful.

A vision bled over present reality.

A bedridden male with white hair and dark skin lies in an ornately decorated bed of white and gold. He gazes up weakly in bewilderment with pleading eyes. His voice is little more than a rasp. Hands trembling, he reaches for a person in front of him that I cannot yet see.

“Where is my daughter?”

A soft voice comes from behind me.

“I’m right here, father.”

The vision clears so quickly that it’s possible Thalia didn’t notice that I’d momentarily disappeared. She only continued to study me as she waited for my reply.

“What is it exactly that you have to offer as an ally? And why have you come all the way to Atratus seeking allies? Surely, there are larger, more formidable allies on the continent who would join you.”

“I have acquired them as allies already…”

My patience has already grown exceedingly thin. I could practicallyfeelmyolana kah’hei’spanic from here. My voice comes out a growl that only seems to spur her on.

“That only further confuses me as to why you wish to ally? Surely you realize there will be an era of turmoil as I take the throne… Atratus is a small region with even fewer resources. ”
