“General?”

“When you see Miroslav, please send him here. It’s urgent.”

She looked disappointed that I wasn’t going to clue her in on the epiphany I’d had. As much as I trusted her, I wasn’t about to tellanyoneabout who her parents were. As soon as I could get Miroslav back here, in the off-chance he didn’t already know, I’d simply convince him to bring us to Mors’ temple because of his mark on her wrist.

“Yes, sir,” she said begrudgingly. I willed a small purse of gold coins into my hand and palmed it to her.

“I want you to research everything you can about healing gods and their magic?—

Her eyes narrowed. “You do realize I have other patients to take care of…”

Like Nakoa. The soon-to-be King.

“Indeed, I do. Which is why I’m incentivizing you… Youdorealize she’s your futureQueen.”

A glare simmered somewhere beneath Bohyun’s slightly pinched expression before lifting her chin as she relented.

“Fine.”

“I’ll send for you as soon as we return.”

“Where are you going?”

Instead of answering, I gave her an appreciative nod.

“Thank you, Bohyun. I am truly grateful.”

Bohyun’s glare returned.

“General.”

At that, she turned and left.

When I heard my front door snick shut, I finally exhaled a breath I felt like I’d been holding since Mareina and I had entered the palace.

Mareina, of course, hadn’t moved an inch. I went and collapsed on the bed on the other side of her, rolling over to face her. My hand slid over hers. It felt… unnaturally cool. My eyes dipped to watch the steady, gentle rise and fall of her breath. It was the only thing keeping me from completely falling apart.

My eyes narrowed at the sight of the blood on her chest. I’dwilledit all away… I reached for the spot where it peaked out from between her breasts before examining my fingertip, which came away with nothing. I slightly lifted the linen shirt I’d replaced her fighting leathers with to discover… scales? Such a dark red on Mareina’s skin they were nearly black.

I rose onto one elbow, pulling down the loose neckline of my shirt on her to get a better look.Willingmy eyes not to ogle her luscious breasts. However, as soon as I saw what laid between her breasts, it wasn’t difficult to do.

A snake.

A third eye rested in the center of its head. While it still appeared as ink on her skin, it moved. The creature appeared to tilt its head to examine me, briefly flicking out its tongue before it slithered into the shape of an Ouroboros.

I stared at it in shock. Squeezing my eyes shut and opening them again to see if my vision was… lacking.

It had only been a handful of days ago that I’d seen Mareina’s blessedly bared breasts… And that snake certainly hadn’t been there.

Though neither had those magnificent wings at her back…

Gods… What else had transpired that she hadn’t yet told me about?

Not that we’d had the time to discuss anything.

I covered her breasts and laid back down beside her. My mind reeling at everything that had transpired over the last several days.

The fucking world had changed.
