I sat up, swinging my legs over the bed.

Thalia reached out for me, curling her fingers around my bicep to ensure I was steady on my feet. I wasn’t sure whether to shove her away because it might feigned concern to soften my heart towards her so she could get what she wanted… Or allow my heart to be softened by the action because it was genuine.

I did neither. Instead, I ignored her. A few gasps sounded, and someone made a choking noise. My gaze dropped to the mutilated sight of my tail… Though it appeared to be growing back. ThankAkash.

No, that wasn’t what had caused the gasps.

I scanned the room, looking for a full-length mirror, my eyes landing on a gold-framed, floor-to-ceiling one on the opposite end of the room. My breath punched out of me at the sight before me.

My wings.

My beautiful wings…

All of my feathers…

Gone.

Instead of the wings that only Seraphi, rare bird shifters, and the odd fae who likely had hybrid blood from the two…

Mine were now like that of a gargantuan bat.

Or demon.

Instead of my lush, lustrous feathers, my wings were now made up of thin dark membranes, slender, curved and flexible-looking bones that ran through them, and sharp thumb claws at their angular peaks.

I flexed them wide… In equal parts horror and admiration. They looked... terrifying.

And I liked it.

Thalia appeared at my side, head tilted in open curiosity. She tentatively held a hand out, lifting her eyes to mine in permission.

“May I?”

Some foreign feeling invaded my chest.

Was I… Nervous?

I nodded, and her petite hand reached out to stroke the delicate membrane and one of the top bones.

A full-body shudder worked through me, and arousal flared to life deep in my belly.

She snatched her hand back as my wings snapped shut, folding tightly against my back.

Fuck.

“Sorry… I didn’t mean to?—

My response came out gruff.

“It’s fine.”

She nodded, her gaze running over me with admiration.

“They are… Truly breathtakingly beautiful.”

My heart flip-flopped in my chest, and I quickly shut out that entirely too warm and unwelcome feeling.

I left Thalia standing there as I returned to myolana kah’hei. My thoughts steadfastly on Mareina.
