Zurie scowled impatiently at me as I wiped tears from my eyes as my laughter oscillated repeatedly between a breathless chuckle and an unhinged cackle.

“Are you quite finished?”

Fate certainly had a sense of humor.

“You’ve destroyed an entire Kingdom. Committed mass genocide on multiple occasions… I just can’t help but find humor in the sheer level of delusion you must live in to think I would actually valueyourassistance.”

Like any truly delusional person, she didn’t even acknowledge the truth I’d just thrust in front of her.

“Whether you like it or not, you’re going to need my help.”

“Give me one reason not to kill you, Zurie, because it’s all I’ve dreamt about for years.”

Her expression almost became wistful as she stared at me, gradually shaking her head as a sad smile curled her mouth. She heaved a sigh, suddenly looking as though a wave of bone-deep exhaustion washed over her.

“You’ll soon discover there are many reasons you need me…”

I frowned my increasing boredom. So many words yet so little meaning.

She gave me a sly and frustratingly smug look.

“Least of all being that I know where your father is.”

MAREINA

Ahollow ache, like my heart had been carved out of my chest, woke me. Every bone in my body ached like I’d fallen from a great height and landed head-first on stone. Like my skull had been split in half. Still crawling out of the dregs of a deep sleep, that perceived hole in my chest had my hand fisting the shirt covering it as memories returned to me from the…How long had I been unconscious?

A groan escaped me.

Delicate hands slipped over mine. I didn’t have to open my eyes to know they didn't belong to Mareina.Thalia’s magic brushed against mine, gentle and inquisitive.

Caring.

The polar opposite of Mareina’s magic.

“Hey… How’re you feeling?”

Hushed murmurs erupted around us, and half a dozen others’ magic pressed against mine. Myolana kah’hei.

Forcing my eyes open felt like ripping open parcels sealed shut.

It took several bleary moments for my vision to settle.

Thalia stared down at me with wide eyes, her brow furrowed with concern.

Pomona shoved past her, gripping my hand in hers. Her face was sheet white, wrought with worry. Her bright hair had a messy red halo around her head as if she’d relentlessly been running her fingers through the strands.

“Koa… Thank Akash…”

Val and the rest of myolana kah’heihuddled around the bed, luxurious and so ornately decorated it was gaudy.

Val’s expression held none of its usual warmth or joviality as he squeezed my blanketed foot.

“Gave us right scare there, brother.”
