I could have purred.

“I’ll see you when I return from Vyssini next week, ok?… Be careful with this male in Ouvelleete… Don’t make the mistake of underestimating anyone. Even if he is half-human…”

I couldn’t help the smile quirking my lips. I had faced countlesswielders, minorior not, and had always emerged victorious. Even so, Malekai never failed to fuss over me each time before I left.

“You be careful.”

“Mareina, I’m going to have an army of 30 men in Vyssini with me…You’rethe one who’s going alone…”

I fisted the front of his fighting leathers and stood on my tiptoes to press a kiss to his cheek.

“Thank you for your concern… I’ll be careful. I promise.”

Malekai kissed the top of my head as a question rose to my tongue. A question I already knew the answer to but couldn’t stop myself from asking…

“Malekai?”

“Hm?”

I lowered my voice, eyes darting to our surroundings, and raised a barrier.

“How do you feel about The Uprising?”

“What do you mean?”

“Do you… sympathize with them at all? What they’re fighting for…”

Malekai’s brows pinched as he pulled back to study my face.

“Why? Do you?”

I sighed, rolling my eyes. “Answer me.”

He took a deep breath, gaze wandering as though this were the first time he’d given it any thought and, though not unexpected, another stone of disappointment dropped into the pit of my stomach.

“I think the people fighting in The Uprising are poor and miserable and are looking for a way out. Even if it’s the wrong way.”

That stone in my stomach seemed to sink further.

“And… Do you feel as though their actions are justified?”

“Iunderstandit. I just feel like they aren’t smart enough or strong enough to overcome their own adversity.”

I took a deep breath, exhaling loudly and shaking my head.

“That’s sad,” I murmured, more to myself than anyone else.

“Indeed it is,” he muttered for an entirely different reason than my own. His blatant lack of empathy was one of the exceedingly few things that had always held me slightly aback from giving in to him. Not that I could point any fingers… I was Zurie’s most notorious murderer.

“If they really wanted to make a better life for themselves, they would have or could have… You’re the perfect example of that. Look how far you’ve come since the Erosyan Temple.”

I shook my head, pulling away.

You actually have no idea.

“Not everyone can join Zurie’s army, Malekai. Not everyone is a warrior. Not everyone is willing to die in battle or sell their soul to be Zurie’s wrath.”

The anger in my words was directed more at myself than him, and he knew it.
