“What have you done?”

Nakoa exhaled heavily, annoyance written all over his face.

“Prevented you from doing something you’d regret.”

My voice dropped to something inhuman and guttural.

“I’m going to rip you apart with my teeth until you beg me for death.”

Nakoa rolled over, climbing out of bed.

“What do you remember of last night?”

“Enough to know that you’re a fucking lying, conniving —

His abrupt, deep belly laugh cut me off.

The flames of my rage rose… Tempered with begrudging gratitude at the fact that Nakoa apparently had the decency to not take advantage of me in such an uninhibited state.

“That ishilariouscoming from the she-devil that sauntered into my bedroom wielding a dagger. Was the only reason you accepted my invitation happen to be so you could murder me in my sleep? And who gave you grá root potion?”

Nakoa shook his head, scrubbing a palm over his face as he waited for my response.

Miroslav. That wretched bastard.

Had it been an accident?Miroslav wasn’t the type who fell prey toaccidents…Was he hoping that I would just get myself killed? But how was it he had known my dream…

He can read minds, you idiot.

I couldn’t fathom why, in all the god's names, he would plan such a thing… Unless this really was just all entertainment for him. As an Orisha, living for many thousands of years, perhaps he hadgrown so detached and bored witheverythingthat he could only seek fulfilment in the manipulation and suffering of others… But all under the guise of creating some kind of revolution?

None of it made sense.

If that was his way of trying to get me killed without raising any eyebrows, that would be pretty fucking elaborate.

Oh, gods… Was he testing my loyalty? Had he even planned it with Zurie?

I also obviously had noreasonableresponse to Nakoa’s line of questioning. I didn’t even have fully formed answers of my own.

My mind whirled, trying to come up with even a vaguely believable lie. But lying had never been my strong suit, and the male was going to die anyway. So what did it matter if he knew I was sent to kill him? If not me, then by someone else. It would change nothing.

“You’ve clearly made an enemy of the wrong person.”

Nakoa gave me a blank look before bursting into a throaty laugh.

“You’re gonna have to narrow it down for me,maha mo’ina li’ili.”

My little nightmare.

A growl escaped me. Of course, he had so many enemies that more than one of them wanted him dead.

“I work for Queen Zurie as her Royal Irae.”
