NAKOA

For the first few hours of our journey, Mareina and I didn't speak. I’d been lost in either my thoughts or the ever-increasing visions… Which had grown to become disorienting and overwhelming. Several of which revealed moments during this future war I was desperately going to try and prevent.

And how the fuck does one go about preventing something they can't even predict how or when it will happen.

And while the last thing I wanted was another war, if that's what it would take to overthrow Zurie and free my people and our lands, then so be it.

To further inflame matters, the constant ache in my chest due to our wounded and unfulfilled bond was bringing me to a whole new level ofunhinged.

Mareina’s words - despite the sense of doom they should have inspired - were like taking a gulp of fresh air after being dragged beneath the surface of a tumultuous sea.

“Zurie expects me to the day after tomorrow. What will you do when she sends mercenaries after us?”

My Knowingness filled me with an unwavering determination and certainty.

“Exactly what I’ve been doing. Building The Uprising.”

She looked up at me in disbelief. Just another vision stamped itself onto my present reality.

Mareina standing at a glowing river’s edge, The River Oblivion. A field of tall grass and poppy flowers behind her. Two of Mors’ famed Pharalaki hover at her sides. A mournful look sits heavily on her face.

The vision cuts away all at once, leaving me staring down atpresent reality Mariena.

Terror creeps over my senses… Terror I can’t accept.

There’s no way…

Why would she be in Avernus?

The Underworld.

Does she die killing Zurie?

I'd had countless premonitions of Mareina for over a hundred years before I met her. So many of which hadn't even yet come to pass. It was entirely possible this one wouldn’t take place for hundreds more.

The realization lets me exhale a breath I hadn’t realized I’d even been holding.

Mareina’s brow pinches. “Are you OK?”

Her eyes searched mine and forced the thought and a deeply unsettling sensation with me.

“Yes. Fine.”

She gives me a strange look but blessedly doesn’t push the matter.

“And you have an army large enough to match hertens of thousands?”

“We are well on our way…”

Not that I will need to rely on it once we can fulfil this fucking bond.

“You could let me go back, and I’ll tell her I couldn’t find you.”

Despite the lack of conviction in her voice, a traitorous and entirely unwanted pain flared in my chest at the words shedidn’tspeak. She mentioned nothing about even returning.

Which was precisely why she was still bound.

I dropped my glamor. Her sharp intake of breath at the sensation of our souls being utterly inextricably bound was a balm to my soul. Our tether was even stronger since last night. The mating instinct winding that unbreakable tether between us tighter and tighter until we collided.
