“Fuck you.”

“Not until you beg me.”

Nakoa swayed, catching himself with one hand on the ground.

My heart pounded furiously in my heart knowing it would take more than this to kill him. Nakoa forced himself upright.

I steeled myself, taking a small step to close the distance between us.

He stared up at me like a boy in love, clearly far more deranged than I’d given him credit for.

I pressed the blade just to the right of his sternum where I couldfeelhis heart pounding.

Alarm bells went off in my mind just as the command escaped my lips, pulled from me directly that unfathomable thing between us.

“Lift your glamor,” I whispered.

All at once, his magic poured over me, and the rest of his features shifted. His glorious wings unfurled, his fangs descended, and his tail immediately curled around my leg.

“Sorry… He has a mind of his own.”

My heart squeezed at the action but he removed his tail, which only proved to make my heart ache at its absence… And just like that, I slammed the door to my freedom shut. Nakoa watched, knowing clearly what he’d witnessed, too.

My lungs, too filled with both relief and despair to breathe properly.

“I understand a future beside me might seem bleak right now, but… If it brings you any consolation… There will come a day that you no longer have to fight or wield a sword to survive because of it… I know that… you have grown weary of it.”

Little did he know just how desperately I craved such a future. To be able to trade my sword in for… gardening and forest-dwelling… Seaside walks, and lots of books.

And love.

Most of all, love.

With Malekai.

Gods, I fucking burned to return to him. Just to be wrapped in his arms.

Nakoa’s bronzed skin had grown pallid due to blood loss and likely our fraying tether. Remarkably, his neck was already halfway healed as I pressed the blade against his chest above his heart, a bead of blood blossoming. However, I found myself roaring in frustration before finally returning to his back, where the arrow was buried.

“You’re going to be weakened from blood loss,” I said, my voice a hollow shell.

“You almost sound dismayed at the idea.”

“And you sound even less concerned than I am.”

“It’s not the first time I’ve been shot with an arrow, or fought with far graver injuries. Though, I can proudly say you’re the only one who’s ever managed to slit my throat.”

I scowled, knowing what I needed to do if he was going to go fight a horde of bandits.

“Wreckless male.”

Nakoa let out a grunt in time with the sickening sound of tearing flesh as I firmly yanked the arrow from his shoulder. An inch-wide hole gaped, followed by a steady gush of blood. I quickly sunk my fangs into the flesh at the underside of my forearm before pressing it to his mouth. Nakoa reared back in surprise for a moment.

“Hurry up.”

Nakoa responded by gripping my forearm and holding it to his parted lips.

As he dragged in the first gulp, a low groan escaped him followed by a doubling of his efforts. My heart began to pound in my ears nearly as powerfully as the throbbing, tingling pleasure started to build in my core.
