Today, I wore leggings, sneakers, and one of Konner’s old sweatshirts, which hung to mid-thigh on me. I had cut holds in the ends of the sleeves for my thumbs to go through, allowing them to cover most of my hand but leaving my fingers free. Doing this had the advantage of keeping my hands warm, even if I had to still push them up if I didn't want them to get into water or my food.

Crossing my arms pulled the sweatshirt tighter around my willowy frame. Yeah, these men could break me with one hand, given how thin I was. Or just pick me up and carry me under one of those massive tree limbs. I grimaced, but kept my eyes on them.

The other man snorted before grinning back at me. The asshole sputtered out his indignation.

“You are on Apollo’s lands, you little—” the man shouted, one finger stabbing out towards my face.

“Temper, Octavius. If you hurt her, our boss will have your ass. You are arguing with our esteemed guest. One he specifically invited to visit him here on Delphi.” He put extra emphasis on the word 'specifically'.

Well, fuck.

Delphi was where Apollo, the oracular god, lived. The god who was THE oracle of all times. And the crazy deity thought he had invited me here.

Ignoring the fact I hadn't received an invitation from anyone, I dropped my arms, eying the two men, wariness clear in my gaze.

“So, it appears the asshole is Octavius. Who are you?” I chirped out, keeping my tone light so they wouldn't guess how scared I was right now.

I ignored the man muttering curses under his breath, focusing on the other one. He was the more dangerous of the two, with his smooth talk and a face that lied by looking open and welcoming.

“Me? I am Samuel. No one in particular.”

Sure.

I have another leg you can pull; you know. Not an idiot here; I had two brothers. No one who worked with Apollo would be “no one in particular”.

Of course, I didn’t say any of this out loud, but I'm sure my face showed my thoughts.

The asshole, Octavius, barked out an angry chuckle. “I don’t think she believes you.”

Samuel shrugged. “Doesn’t really matter, does it? Come along, little oracle. Apollo wants to talk to you.” He put out a hand, pointing towards the hill behind me.

I studied him before looking at the surrounding area, thinking hard about my options.

Two big powerful men, one bulky with corded limbs. The other one leaner, his body that of a sprinter. Woodland in front of me and a small incline in back. There was nothing else around, not even animals.

I glanced up. Well, besides the ravens circling in the sky.

Huh.

I didn’t recognize this place. I didn’t know what fate had set me up for. There was nothing for me to do, though, except bide my time. And take any opportunity that came up in the future to escape.

I turned on my toes and started walking, hearing the men follow behind me, neither saying anything. Their footsteps were quiet, with only an occasional whisper of sound when they stepped on a pebble or twig.

I guess I’m not in Kansas—or on Earth—anymore.

And instead of a wizard, I was going to visit a major god.

Chapter Three

Soren

Eighteen months and my heart ached for my mate. I reached out for her, but I couldn’t even sense her warmth in my head. Trying to connect on her dream world didn't work. I couldn't feel her. While I understood only a few hours had passed for her; for me, the time had dragged on.

The man, Tamerin, was interesting. He had woken up able to speak broken English on the second day we arrived here. By the end of that first week, he sounded like a native American. It was freaky, almost like hearing Holden talk in an alien language to some of those who came from other worlds or universes.

He had listened to our story about why we were here and suggested that we stay with him as long as we told him more about Earth. He was a scholar on his own world and was interested in so many things.

“Keep an eye out for the giant spiders, boy.” Tamerin grunted at me as I walked through the enclosing tunnels. “They are hunting for prey for their eggs, which will hatch soon.”
