It suddenly hit me. We needed Lily. She could interpret these writings. Perhaps even had seen something similar to what was within those pages. If there was a way around whatever was going to happen, she would find it. My mind reached for hers without a second thought.

I sensed her warmth, which was tinged with sadness, but I couldn’t quite reach her. Our mate bond was still blocked, and probably would remain this way until I left this darn planet. I gave up in frustration, deciding to try later, right before I went to sleep. Perhaps things would be easier when I was more relaxed.

Lexi looked at me. “You still can’t link with Lily?”

I shook my head.

“I can’t with Lark either. I can feel his agitation. Almost hear his voice in my head. But it is like he is just out of range. Like if I try just a little harder, I might connect, but it never works.”

Something in her tone caused me to look at my sister. Really look at her.

On the outside, she was beautiful. Glowing with health and competence. She had grown taller and had strong, sleek muscles covering her slim frame. Her hair now hit the small of her back, the red strands gleaming in the fire's light.

But something inside her was—dying. I reached down our bond and she let me in. She was hurting in too many areas. She missed Lark as much as I did Lily; as if he was her reason to live. But that wasn’t all that was wrong with her.

She needed Artemis, as well. The goddess had touched her and now her essence was necessary in my sister's life. I hadn’t realized how deep that connection was. I wondered if her mate had any inkling. That she would always have to return to the Temple to regenerate.

That it would have to be the first place we went to after connecting with our mates when we got back.

Her eyes met mine, noticing I had figured it out, and she gave a small nod before turning away once again.

I was sure Tamerin hadn’t seen what had gone on between us, but he still looked at us with knowing eyes. He might have guessed we had a telepathic link. And that being siblings bonded us together. I wondered how he would react to our pack bonds which allowed us to communicate telepathically in both forms with so many others who were connected with our Alpha.

Even though we didn't have such bonds with the others, like the dragons, we still had a way to communicate without words.

The older man broke his gaze and looked down at the book. “Well, I am hoping my brother is still alive and kicking on Earth. I would like to see him, to build our family back together one person at a time. Once I connect with him, we can go looking for Belesh. And perhaps, the others.”

I sensed he hoped that his mother was still alive. I would have, in his shoes, but there was no way to find out while we were stuck on this world.

A distant baying of something canine sounded in the quiet, and I watched as Tamerin's body tensed with anxiety before he straighten his back, taking back control of his emotions.

“Gather your things. They are still hunting us. Let’s move to our next place.” He stood up and started shoving his clothing into a bag, the book placed in the middle to protect it.

Lexi let out a low growl as she followed his actions. “I am starting to hate that man with a vengeance. I want to just stand up to him and show him I'm not property. We are sentient people. Our wolves are a part of us.”

I went through the motions of packing as well. I had little to do, since I had unpacked only what was necessary. Not knowing if it was a touch of the sight or just intuition, but I was certain that asshole was coming after us and we would have to run with only a moment's notice.

This time, though, I had left him some extra special gifts. I was a witch, after all. And while we didn’t start fights, it was okay to end them.

I wanted this ended now.

Pulling my pack on my back, I walked the perimeter of the cave we had been living in the last few days. I place several herbs and stick bundles at various points.

Lexi glanced at me out of the corner of her eye. “Witchcraft?”

I cleared my throat, a slight bit of color staining my cheeks. “Even Ravenal would say I have been patient long enough. It is time to use more of the tools we have available to us.”

Tamerin turned and stared at me. “What is this witchcraft? What have you done?”

The baying sounded closer, and my sister sauntered over to join him at the entrance.

“I will explain later. Let’s make it to our hiding spot. We will then see if my magic will make any difference.” I hurried over to the other two.

He shot me a glance and headed out at a brisk walk. We always made sure we had a hole to hide in near where we stayed so we could hunker down if caught unawares. Once they left, then we could travel to our next stopping place, taking care to cover our tracks.

Still what good did that do, since they had found us every time?

No more. I would start using my talents, even if it ended with unexpected consequences. We were too tired to continue running, and it was almost time to circle back to our contact point.
