“Wait! Renth!”

“I have to get back now. I will tell your mate you are well.”

And he was gone.

I woke, shivering in the cool dawn air, my sheets and blankets askew and half onto the floor. Cooled sweat beaded on my forehead and I realized my braid had become undone, tendrils of silver hair lying against my face.

Soren was alive. He was well. He just wasn’t home. Yet.

And Lexi was with him.

I had seen another glimpse of him in the beast’s mind. He was a little older now. And he had a familiar. Ravenal will be amazed to find out he was expanding his witchy talents! Add that how handsome he had turned out and I will have to beat other women away from him.

My wolf sat up with that thought, a growl coming from her lips. She rarely spoke to me, since supporting an oracle took so much energy, but she was the one that had chosen our mate. And she was prepared to take the next step to secure her selection.

Heck, I was ready. And from what I had seen of Soren, he was just as eager as we were.

I rolled out of bed and moved into my bathroom. It was early enough that Thea wouldn’t deliver my breakfast for another hour. This gave me time to plan. Time to see if I could find that raven again.

I splashed some cold water onto my face before moving to the window in the sitting room. I glanced at the closed door, wondering if Henry was on the other side, listening. Or, perhaps Samuel was on duty.

I was glad that Octavius was gone for now, though. The man had bothered me.

Cracking the window open a little, I shivered, the dawn air being chilly. I was ready to leave this place. I had learned much here, but if Soren was going back, I wanted to be with him. Time to figure out a way to escape.

A raven circled in the sky above me and I wondered if that was the one from before, but it was a blackbird that landed on the railing in front of me this time, startling me.

Someone had banded a small piece of paper on its leg. I quickly took it off. The bird flew away as soon as I had it. The other, larger one called out once, both of them disappearing into the sunlit sky.

I read the note, which was short and sweet: Be ready. We will come soon.

I sighed, ripping it up into tiny pieces and stuffing them into my mouth just as the door to my rooms opened.

Well, shit and damn! It was still Henry, and he was glowering at me.

“Why are you up? What are you doing?” His harsh voice was filled with suspicion.

I swallowed the paper, glad the shreds were small, as I leaned back against the window, closing it with a slight click. Henry’s eyes went to it and grew darker.

“I had a bad dream and woke up early. Sitting here and peering out over the gardens made me feel better.”

“Why was the window open?” He came closer, studying it. His eyes shifted to scan the sky beyond it and the ground below.

“The weather. I wanted to check to see what it was like. I think I will wear warmer clothes this morning. It is getting quite chilly out.” I stood up, but his hand shot out and his fingers wrapped around my arm, holding me still.

“I don’t trust you, little oracle. You know I will tell Apollo you said you had a bad dream and he will suspect, like I do, that you had a foretelling. You will tell us what you saw.”

I raised one eyebrow at him, my face expressionless. I wouldn’t tell him anything. And I doubted he could make me. The sun god? Well, that might be a different story. Still, I was going to keep my mouth shut for as long as I could.

“Well, you do that, Hermes. The messenger. Does that mean that you were always a snitch? Carrying your little stories to whomever was buying your loyalty at the time?”

The man’s face grew dark with anger. “You watch yourself—”

“What is going on here?” Samuel walked through the door, interrupting what Henry was going to say next.

The godling dropped his hand and rubbed it on his pants, as if he had held something disgusting. He gave me one last glower before wiping all emotion from his face as he turned to the other guard.

“Nothing. She had the window open, and I was questioning her about it. Where is Apollo?” He rushed towards the other guard, pushing by him and through the door.
