Speaking of which…

Apollo shifted his gaze down and started spinning a pen on its surface. “Please tell me about your nightmare, Lily.”

My eyes popped open wider, my legs frozen in mid-motion. What? The? Hell? The almighty sun god was asking me for something? And not only that, but he also said ‘please’?

He chuckled tiredly. “Am I really that bad? If so, sorry. There is a lot going on. I'm trying to counteract whatever my sister is doing right now. We don’t need to give one planet so much power that it can destroy all the rest of the universes with one poor decision.”

I frowned. “Earth doesn’t have that kind of power. In fact, most of the people don’t even know that life exists outside their world. Humans are egotistical, I would agree with that. But they refuse to be anything but ignorant. You could shove the evidence into their faces and they will still choose to believe they are the only intelligent life in their one and only universe.”

Apollo listened, his eyes still glued to his desk.

I sat up, pushing stray strands of hair out of my face. “Why is my nightmare important?”

He glanced up at me from under his lashes. “Because you are an oracle, like me. Everything we dream, everything we think is significant, whether we know it.”

Interesting.

I thought back to my dream. “I can’t tell you more than I dreamed of a sentient, exceptional, cat-like beast who talked to me.”

“What did it talk to you about?”

Apollo now had his eyes focused on me, but I didn't realize it. Sorrow and longing swept through me, strong enough I had to work to keep the tears from falling.

“My mate.”

Chapter Eleven

Soren

I think Lexi was right, not that I was going to tell her that.

Renth felt comfortable in my head, so much so it almost didn’t seem strange to converse with him throughout the day. When we got near to the place Grulp was taking us to, the lecanifer took over and picked a quicker path to the cave, which looked out over the plains.

I could just make out the marker I had left when we first came here, its florescent orange now muted by the wind and sand.

Now that it was time to leave, I had mixed feelings. I really wanted to see Lily, but I enjoyed my time here without so many other things in play. Here, it was just about us and survival, nothing more. No conspiracy about trying to end our world. No alien parasites attacking humans. No concerns about the planet killing itself.

Only a few days would have passed on Earth. I wondered how Lexi and I would adjust once we returned. How would the others react to the new us? Would our relationships with our foster parents or our mates or even our friends be the same? How could they be since we were different from who we were when we left? And I am not talking only about our ages…

“Nervous?” My sister scuttled a little closer to me. She stayed away during our hike to the cave because Renth was always next to me, but came over as soon as he had left to hunt.

I shot a glance at her before looking down at my hands, where I was moving the sand in little patterns with my magic.

“Yeah.”

“Miss your mate?”

I snorted, dropping my exercise. “Stupid question, Lexi. It’s like asking if I missed my arm after someone had amputated it. What if I had asked you if you missed Lark?”

She giggled. “Yep, I understand. But I got a reaction out of you. You have been in your head so much since we met the lecanifer. I am… Well, a little lonely without you. I wonder how Lily is going to feel when you return with your familiar.”

Would I exclude her, all for this new and shiny relationship? I thought back over the afternoon and realized I had ignored everyone else, talking only with Renth because he was so interesting.

Well, fuck.

“Sorry?” I hunched my shoulders before releasing them. “I mean, I expect things will change once we are back together. In so many ways.” I wiggled my eyebrows, trying to imply sexy times would be in my future, as well as to lighten the mood a bit.

Lexi let out a bark of laughter, one hand over her mouth.
