No worries about your mate. I won't disrupt your bond with her. In fact, I have introduced myself to her already. She has a lovely soul. An oracle. The universes are definitely going through changes when they appear.

The enormous beast paced into the cave, slipping by us all, almost without the others noticing him. Tamerin did, but Shanni was asleep and Grulp was setting up the place to defend against any possible attacks.

I turned to stare at him. “You have met Lily?”

Renth stopped next to my sleeping bag, dropping to the ground with a groan. I have. She was gracious. You two are well matched.

He licked one gigantic paw, his pink tongue pushing between his toes.

Lexi stared at me a moment and then bumped my shoulder. “I take it he has. I guess that proves he is the familiar for you, bro.” She sashayed over to her bag, flopping onto it and reaching for a book.

Right. She was happy for me, but was lonely herself, with no way to reach Lark. She didn’t dream of him. In fact, she never mentioned her dreams at all after our first year here. Back then, they had been about Artemis, not her mate. That had bothered her so much, she rarely even mentioned him anymore.

“Talk to your wolf, Lexi. Lark is still your true mate. It will be okay,” I whispered to her.

Her shoulders tightened, but she didn’t respond. She didn’t even turn her head to gaze back at me. After a moment, she relaxed once again, and she laid down on her back, her feet crossed, the book open in front of her face.

I wish I could meet him, but I know nothing about the gatekeeper. I only found your mate because her energy lives inside you. But your sister? She has locked me out of her head, even if it wasn’t intentional. It might also be the goddess doing this. They are territorial about their vessels.

I sighed, lying flat on my sleeping bag. It was lumpy and worn from so many nights of use. What I really wanted was to toss it into a trash bin. I dreamed of sleeping on a soft bed, in a room with the perfect temperature, without having to worry if something was going to come and try to eat me.

I was ready to go home.

Stetamus would have to come soon. I wished there was a way we could contact him. What had happened while we were away? Would we seem like strangers when we returned?

We had gained so much more than age. Lexi had gained the craft of making bladed weapons. Ones that sang and were sentient, at least here.

My magic had matured, and I had found a familiar. And what would Ravenal say upon meeting Renth? Would I end up being more powerful than her there on Earth? Or would my magic not work at all anymore?

Perhaps this was all things to figure out later. I was tired of going over them, having no answers. I closed my eyes, just for a moment.

It seemed like I was opening them again just seconds later, except the dawn lit the cave with a soft light.

Someone was out on the sand. The energy there was disturbed. Renth stood at the entrance, gazing out into the desert.

I yawned, getting up and walking over to see what he was looking at.

“Are they still there?”

The catlike beast shook its head, his gaze unwavering. I turned to see what had him so fascinated.

Out in the distance, I spied a medium-sized box. One that hadn’t been there before.

Stet must have come.

Excitement filled me as I spun to go back into the cave for my protective gear and weapons when a motion caught my eye. Something gray and running fast was out there—

Lexi.

My sister was already heading towards the spot.

I slowly turned back forward, my hand falling onto Renth's back. “Damn it, Lexi!” I swore softly.

Tamerin moved up beside me, followed by Grulp, holding Shanni.

I counted out my breaths, hoping against hope, watching her wolf dart across the pale landscape.

One. Two. Three…
