Apollo exhaled. “Your mate? What good is that for me? Who is he?”

I smiled wistfully, knowing the god wouldn’t be happy with this answer. “He is a lycanthrope. A wolf shifter, like me. He is also my best friend and has discovered he has some skills as a witch.”

Soren was more than what I had stated, but I wouldn’t tell him that. I was afraid he would try to use him against me. Nope, I would escape here alone, without the man taking another hostage.

Apollo snorted. “Another of my sister’s creatures. She has so many on her little blue planet. What is so important about Earth, anyway?”

I swung one foot up and down. “We are scrappers?”

“What does that mean?”

“No matter what happens, no matter how often you push us down, we stand back up and surge forward.”

The god stared at me, his body language telegraphing his confusion.

This god never knew what it was like to come back after misfortune. In fact, he wouldn't recognize an unfortunate event if it bit him in the ass. Not everything could go his way. But in the overall scheme of things, I realized most things turned out the way he wanted in the end.

Except that wasn’t happening on Earth.

No, we had punted several of his minions off the surface and delayed their invasion. He didn’t have a hold over humans, while Artemis still was queen of the wildlife there. And those of two spirits, like shifters and lycanthropes. I guessed this was one reason he had kidnapped me—because he desired to learn why she was winning their little battle.

Moving as if I was facing a raging beast, I sat up, keeping my gaze locked with his. “I want to go back to my room now.”

I was over this fiasco and wanted to go home. I needed to figure out how to get back to Earth.

“I am not done—”

“I am.” I got up and went to the door, opening it up. Samuel stood outside, leaning against the far wall. Seeing me, he unfolded to his full height, his eyes going to his master and employer.

Apollo hesitated, but I just started walking down the hallway. He must have waved the guard on because his footsteps echoed behind me, following mine.

I didn’t care. Not any more. Marching back to my room, I only stared straight ahead.

Turning a corner, I froze between one step and the next.

Henry was lounging outside of my room, the damn god smirking at me. How had he gotten here so fast?

Samuel walked past me and stopped in front of the man. “This is still my shift.”

“Yeah? Well, the big guy doesn’t trust her. She is hiding something.”

I wanted to laugh at that; I was hiding quite a lot. Not that I would tell this asshole any of it. Instead, I slipped around Samuel and opened the door to my room.

He backed up into the doorway. “She may be, but he promised her safety if she cooperated. And she is.”

A dark brow rose higher. “Is she?” The asshole pulled himself up, almost as if he was a puppet with strings. “She got Octavius all turned around and acting crazy. Apollo is now asking her for things. And here you are, protecting her. She is not a god, so how is she doing this?”

Samuel crossed his arms over his chest. “Don’t know. Don’t care. I am guarding her right now from everyone. Including you.”

Henry gave a curt bounce of his head before turning away, disappearing between one step and the next.

Samuel counted out five deep breaths before relaxing. It was only then when he turned to grab the door handle. “He is gone for now, but he will be back. In fact, he will be your guard in about four hours. Just—” His worried gaze met my eyes. “Be careful, Lily. He is not one to play with. He may be a minor god, but he can rip you apart and even Apollo won't be able to stop him.”

Nodding once, I kept my movements brief. He studied me as he closed the door.

Spinning around, I was blind to everything in the room. How was I going to escape this place? Not even the person who was sending me messages could know about Hermes. I mean, Henry. How can they fight two gods?

Shivering, I turned to grab a book off my desk, not caring which one it was. Carrying it to the couch, I flopped down onto the cushions. Looking at it, I realized I had picked up the one about Oracles. Letting it fall open on my lap, I didn't care what page it opened to.
