I ran my hands once more through Renth's thick fur before rising to face her. “I can explain.”

Stet crossed his massive arms over his chest, his scowl in place on his demon face.

I pointed towards the older man. “This is Tamerin. He is an Universa. His people don’t come from that planet. He was waiting there for—” My words stuttered to a halt, trying to pick the right words to make my sister understand why he had to come back with us.

Lexi took up the explanation. “Look, Betta. The guy's got a book of prophecy, which speaks about what is happening to us now. But his people wrote about this event centuries ago. He also said he has a brother who his family sent to Earth sometime in the near past, and he wants to find him. We said you would let him come back. Don’t make us liars.” Her tone was just as aggressive as Betta's.

Betta peered up at her mate before looking back at her sister. “That may be true, but we don’t know if he should go to our planet. Perhaps someone else can search for this family member for him.”

Lexi shrugged. “Maybe. I told him he could either stay here or with the pack, since he didn't appear human enough to pass. I am sure Uncle Shane and Holden would like to meet him. He was very interested in our foster mother when I mentioned she was a hybrid, something not quite like we are.”

Betta exhaled. “Okay. I guess there may be a reason for him to return with you.” She turned to me. “But bringing the wildlife from a feral planet like that one is unconscionable, Soren.”

I stared at her before answering her, picking my words with care. “Not wildlife, Betta. Renth is an intelligent, sentient being. He wants to visit Earth.” I paused once more, adding, almost in a whisper, “He has to come with me since he is my familiar.”

My sister took a step back, the surprise filling her face. “Your—?”

I nodded. “I would like to take him to talk with Ravenal. He says he can change so that no one will know how big he is. But he talks to me. Telepathically. And he lends me power. I couldn’t leave him there after meeting him.”

She exchanged a long glance with her mate. Then she exhaled and the head of the peace guardians waved one hand in the air, using one of his signals for the others. His trio of enforcers all turned and disappeared into the void around this place.

“Welcome to Gate—” Stet said, when someone appeared right in the middle of us.

Renth growled, but I put out a hand on his neck to placate him.

The new person spun around, his eyes wild as he took in each of us before they landed on Lexi.

She grinned and struck a seductive pose, fluttering her long eyelashes at him. “I’m back, baby! Do you like how I grew up?”

Lark froze.

I couldn’t tell how he felt as his back was to me. But if it was me, well…

He moved, rushing to grab his mate. Lifting her up, he enveloped her in his arms, with his face buried in her hair. My sister laughed, her own arms and legs wrapped tight around him.

I wanted that, but with Lily. My heart ached, but their reunion gave me hope.

“Look at you! I want to spank you, but I am very glad you are back and now much older,” Lark mumbled, scenting her neck.

He lifted his head and his gaze traveled over her face. “You are so beautiful!”

Betta scarfed behind him. “She grew up the way she was supposed to, silly. So, you two are now the same age, but we will have to get someone to confirm this.”

Lexi giggled. “And look what I learned how to make!” She slid down his body and stepped away from him, pulling out her knife.

Stet, Betta and Lark all studied it.

“Wow. That is more than a blade, Lexi,” the demon whispered, the awe clear in his voice.

“Her knives have spirit.” Tamerin interjected.

The three turned to gaze at him, having forgotten he still stood there.

“What?” Lark was the first to react.

“Her weapons speak.” The Universa gestured to Lexi’s knife.

Lexi nodded, a dreamy grin on her face while one finger stroked the blade. “This is Skol, and he is mine and mine alone. He helps me determine who should die, who I should only wound, and who I should let live. He wouldn’t let me hurt Renth at all, which is how we knew he was one of the good guys.”
