James groaned. “And which gods are we dealing with now?”

I dropped my gaze to the floor. I thought I knew, based on what had happened to Lily, but I wouldn’t say anything just yet. If the others found out we were going up against Apollo, they may all run and hide.

The Spirit dragon gave me his death stare, figuring I knew more than I was saying. I ignored him, moving around the island to go into the living room. Lexi and Lark were sitting on the couch, so close a piece of paper wouldn't fit between them.

No way I was going to sit with them. Flopping into one of the oversized chairs, my mind went back to the last time I was in Lily's dreamland. And the first sight I had seen of my mate in, for me, over four years. My heart ached, but I had things I had to do first before I could try to track her down. I had to trust she would make her way back here in time. Hopefully, prior to the gods coming to play.

Ravenal followed me, giving the couch and the couple on it a quick glance before she kicked over one of the fluffy floor pillows closer to me. She lowered herself down on it, cross-legged, her eyes going to my face.

Okay. Time for this talk, I guess.

Perceiving the witch's magic reaching out towards me, I opened only the smallest portion of myself to her. I still wasn’t sure if I wanted to share everything I had discovered about my abilities with the coven head yet.

In the back of my mind, I realized Renth had made his way up the hill and was now standing at the back door, using his chuffing sound as his way of knocking.

Maggie open the door for him and the enormous beast slid in, gliding through the house until he sat next to my chair.

Ravenal’s magic wavered for a moment, realizing the lecanifer had appeared, his own powers meshing with mine. Renth drew a barrier over us, thin enough to deter the lightest of probing, but still a warning to the older witch.

She pulled back, a frustrated sigh leaving her mouth. “Heard and received," she said to him. Turning to grimace at me, she stated, "Your familiar is making my reading difficult.”

I raised one eyebrow at her, a smirk on my lips. “Yes, he is.”

She frowned. “Your magics are tied close together already. How long has it been since you two found each other?”

Peering down at Renth, who gave me a toothy grin, I replied, “Days? Definitely less than a week.”

Ravenal gasped, shaking her head, her silvery hair moving across her shoulders. Her white eyes showed her surprise.

“That short a time? Your bond feels like you have been connected for months, if not years!”

Renth chuffed his laugh. By searching through Soren’s memories, I have discovered you don't bond with higher beings. Perhaps that is the problem? A primary ability of my people is to be one side of an equal partnership. Don’t get me wrong—we don't leave our planet to search them out often. But if someone who needs such a connection comes to us, one of us will travel with them, bonded. It so happens both Soren and I were in the same place at the same time. He needed me. I needed… The lecanifer hesitated, as if he was trying to find the right words. He sighed. I craved the union as well. The closeness. A—what is the word you use?—coven or pack. An alliance.

Ravenal nodded, understanding flowing from her.

Cocking my head, I stared at the witch. “I can sense your emotions now.” It perplexed me as to when this had happened. Sensing Lexi was easy since she was my sibling. But now I could get a read on the coven leader, which I couldn’t do before.

Concentrating for a minute, I realized she wasn't the only one. No, now I could sense everyone in this room, including Konner.

Tamerin walked in, a bottle of water in his hand. “Evolution?” He sounded curious, like the philosopher he was.

The older witch answered. “In a way. His magics are maturing. There are so many different types coursing through him. Soren has always been very in tune with the environment. At least here on Earth. Before Lily, he protected his sisters. Once he found his mate, he has spent a considerable time protecting and collecting energy for her. But now, there are more nuances to that. Along with his gaining control over another element, that of fire.”

The Universa sat on the floor, not bothering with a pillow, gazing up at me. “Why would you do that? Feed Lily energy?” He addressed me before taking a sip of his water.

“Because she needed it and I could.” Pausing, I looked over at Ravenal, trying to hide my confused feelings about this next part. “She doesn’t anymore, though. She has figured how to do that for herself, finally. So perhaps my magic is searching for another way of being useful.”

She nodded.

A rush of wind and the caw of ravens blasted through the room, causing us to slap our hands over our ears.

When it settled, all eyes turned to stare at the man in the middle of the room.

Renth sighed, speaking only to me. Hermes.

Well, fuck. The gods have come to call.
