I snorted. “Well, it is close to your gate, so, yeah, I figured you would want to stay here.”

He glanced at me. “Guess that means you will be at the pack’s mating cabin.”

I shook my head. “Nope. I would like to go to the coven lands. I have a little patch of magic that is real cozy for the two of us. It would be perfect and no one can enter it without my permission.”

Stet grinned, "Well, I guess we settled the important part."

Lark and I nodded our agreement. Entering the house, we heard the others in the living room planning things.

I moved to the refrigerator, opening it to see what options we had for beverages. I realized for the first time, I was old enough to drink alcohol. “What do you want?”

Lark peered over my shoulder. “What’s in there? Oooo! How about a Sam Adams?”

I pulled out two and glanced at Stet. “Want a beer?”

He appraised the bottles in my hand. “What is this beer?”

Lark giggled. “Soren was too young to drink before, so this is his first beer. I suspect it is yours as well. Let’s see what both of you think about it.” He grabbed another bottle out of the fridge and turned, reaching for the bottle opener. Within minutes, all three bottles were open and the yeasty scent of the lagers filled the air.

“To mating.” Lark held up his bottle.

“To mating.” I clinked my bottle against his.

“To getting—what do you call it?—drunk.” Stet clinked his against our bottles. “And to mating.”

We all took a gulp before the demon whirled around and spat his mouthful into the sink. “What is this horrible stuff?”

“Hey! You better not be getting drunk!” Lexi’s voice came from the other room.

Lark and I fell over laughing, watching Stet place the full bottle on the counter. He stepped back away from it, his features twisted with disgust.

I took another sip, decided it wasn’t something I liked much either, at least not this type of beer, and put it down.

Lark took another long gulp. “More for me.”

“Lark!”

We all grinned. Sometime soon, we would be married and mated. And we were all looking forward to it. Because even if this whole crappy situation wasn’t over yet, we could still find joy.

Soren

I wandered into the living room, finding only Shalen and Vasteria playing with their grandchildren. Hope, Lauren, and Roxy were giggling as they ran around the two adults, while Shalen pretended to be some sort-of dog. Or so I thought. He was growling out barks like one.

It is a poor imitation of an obsilek, a gigantic hound-like beast on the world he came from. The Trombinone used them to hunt the Universa, almost to extinction. He has experience with being one of their prey.

My eyes flicked over to Renth, who was lying in a corner, quiet, his fur now blending in with the wall. My eyebrows shot up. He was so well camouflaged the girls didn’t even know he was in the room. If they had, they would have been crawling all over him.

Shhh! I needed a break. They are wonderful little beings, but they have more energy than I am used to. He opened one enormous green eye to stare at me. He then closed it shut once again.

I gave him a brief nod and moved to a chair, watching the five of them play for a few moments.

“Girls! Come take a shower!” Holden shouted from upstairs.

The three munchkins stopped, glowering towards the ceiling, an almost identical expression on their faces. Then Lauren sighed, lowering her head. “Coming, Mom.” She trudged over to her grandparents and hugged them both before scampering to the stairs. “I get the hottest water!” She squealed, her footsteps sounding like elephants stampeding.

“No, wait!” Roxy rushed after her sister. She halted, twirling around to give her grandparents quick kisses and then followed her sibling.
