Chapter 6

Winnie

I’m sitting out on the beach watching people walk by thinking about everything that happened. Why didn’t I just tell her years ago when I knew how I felt about him? Now I’ve gone and made a mess out of everything.

“Hey,” Ella says from behind me.

“Hey,” I say, moving over to make space on my blanket.

She sits down and an awkward silence hangs in the air. A couple of minutes later I turn to her. “I’m so sorry Ella.”

Ella shakes her head. “Don’t be sorry. I shouldn’t have been such a bitch about it.”

“I should have told you when it happened so you wouldn’t think like I was trying to keep it from you.”

Ella nods. “Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Remember in tenth grade and Holly Tyson started hanging out with you all of a sudden but it was just because she wanted to date Brody? You were furious with her, and let her know it in front of our entire homeroom.”

Ella starts laughing. “Oh my God! I completely forgot about that.”

“Well I didn’t. I remember it very clearly. So when I realized I was falling for your brother I knew it could never happen. I did everything I could to stay away, but what can I say, I love the goof.” I shrug.

Ella throws her arm around my shoulder and pulls me to her side. “I wish you would have said something earlier, but I get why you didn’t. Just so you know, you and Holly are completely different. We’ve been friends forever. I think I know when someone is using me to get my brother and when someone is friends with me for me.”

“Yeah, I guess you’re right. Still mad at me?” I ask.

“I’m not mad. I was mad, before, but I’m over it now. I just worry that if it doesn’t work out what happens to our friendship then?”

“I know, I’ve thought of that. It sounds crazy, but I think Brody is my one.”

Ella fakes throwing up and I poke her in her side which makes her laugh. “I’m happy for you two and I’m excited that you’re part of the family now. You were already part of the family, but now it’s in a different way. Whatever you know what I mean.”

I laugh. “Yeah, I know what you mean.”

We sit at the beach and talk for a while, but Ella says she has to get back to the shop. I should probably go back too, but I decide to take the rest of the day off and head back to my apartment. When I walk in, the flowers Brody sent me are sitting at the bar, and Brody is standing out on the patio.

I walk out there and Brody looks over his shoulder and smiles at me. “Hey stranger.”

Walking up to Brody, I scoot under his shoulder and wrap my arm around his waist. “Hey baby,” I say.

He kisses the top of my head and holds me as we look out at the ocean.

“Everything okay with Ella?”

I nod. “Yeah, we talked and everything is fine now. I should have just told her from the beginning.”

“Well, I’m not going to say I told you so.”

I pinch his butt, making him jump up and me laugh.

“I love you,” I say, then look up at him to see his reaction.

A huge smile overtakes his handsome face. “Yeah?”

I nod with a smile just as big on mine. “Yeah.”

“Good, because I love you too, darlin’, so fucking much.”
