Kase froze and then burst out laughing. Caden was less amused. He slammed the door and stalked through the room.

“Is something wrong? Your dad?”

Caden jerked and halted a few feet away. His perusal of her body was slow and had her breasts rising and her nipples beading. It had been so long since she had a reaction to a man. His gaze darkened as his brows drew into a deep scowl.

He lifted his chin. “Why are you half naked?”

She glanced down at her body. “The air doesn’t work. It’s hot.”

Caden seemed stunned by her answer. It was a plausible one. He folded his arms and glanced over at Kase. “Are you hearing this?”

Kase snorted, took another drag, and sat in the chair. “Brother, I don’t even have the fucking words right now.”

“I don’t understand.” She looked from one brother to another.

“You are in a fucking crack den, Marissa. You know what coulda happened some fucker got in here while you were asleep?”

She stared back at him, giving no answer.

“Fucking robbed? Assaulted? Killed? Take your pick.” Caden’s voice vibrated through the room in an angry echo. He was waiting on a response, but she didn’t have one. “Oh my God, Riss.” He drove his hands through his hair, leaving his fingers intertwined behind his head. His glare was going right through her. Though her mind was solely focused on her calling her Riss. He said it with familiarity.

“Hold up, Cade,” Kase said, garnering their attention. “Are you looking to get laid?”

“Kase! This is not fucking funny.” It was a warning, but Kase shrugged it off, keeping his eyes locked on Marissa. He was clearly amused by this whole situation.

“What do ya say, Colleen? Up for a two-man train? Ever have a threesome?” He grinned and waggled his brows. “With brothers?”

He was attempting to shock her or scare her. Whatever his intention, it wasn’t working. She slowly shook her head.

He shrugged. “I guess she’s turning us down, brother.”

“Fuck.” Caden was clearly annoyed with his brother for the conversation and with her for staying in a seedy motel.

Marissa cleared her throat. “I wasn’t turning Caden down. I was turning you down.”

She heard the faint sharp inhale from her right. Caden.

Kase snorted, and his mouth widened. “Have at it, Cade.” He headed to the door, glanced over his shoulder, and winked. “Later, Colleen.”

She raised her hand in a short wave. “Bye.”

Kase burst out laughing and closed the door behind him.

“Your brother is a bit of an asshole.” When he didn’t respond, she looked over at Caden. “I made this awkward, didn’t I?”

He cocked a brow and tilted his head. “Not for me.” He was amused. The small glint in his eyes made them appear lighter, which had her on the brink of smiling. “Not too often Kase gets passed up for his little brother. Appreciate the gesture.”

Marissa turned to face the bed. “Yeah, well, I meant it.” She sat down and glanced up at Caden, who looked incredibly uneasy. By her guess, it wasn’t often people were as blatantly honest as she had just been. She clasped her hands. “So, why exactly are you here again?”

Caden sighed. Being reminded apparently dredged back up his anger. Any bit of heated desire she thought she saw earlier had long passed. He was tense from head to toe. His jaw squared, and his cheekbones popped, giving his face a chiseled shape.

“That’s not good for your teeth.”

He seemed taken aback by her comment, but his jaw released, and she smirked. “Clenching your jaw, it’s not good.”

His brows furrowed, and he stared off to the door in obvious confusion. “Who the fuck are you?” It was merely a question without aggression.

“Marissa.”
