His view was pretty too. He dug his hands in his pockets. “Where’d ya take it?”

“Uh, Roster or Rooster, I think. The one down the road on Maven Street.”

“Rister’s,” he bit out with a soft snarl. The son of a bitch was known for conning people. Especially women.

She snapped her fingers and smiled. “Rister’s, that’s it.”

He stalked over to her, this time standing in front of her and blocking her view. She raised her eyes, and her eyebrows followed suit.

“The guy is an asshole. He’s gonna rip you off.”

“Well, he was recommended by the motel clerk.”

Caden snorted. “Yeah, ’cause that dick is his brother-in-law.”

Marissa laughed and shrugged. “Small towns.”

“Can’t believe I’m gonna do this,” he muttered under his breath. He sighed and looked down at Marissa. Great fucking eyes. Huge eyes, almost too big for her face. She reminded him of those Anime cartoons. He rested his hands on his hips.

“Call him, tell him to stop working on the car, and a flatbed will be by.” He paused, lifting his sleeve at his watch. “In a couple hours.”

“Why?”

“’Cause he’s gonna rip you off.”

She sighed. “Well, whatever the problem is, I need it fixed, so I’ll just let him do whatever needs to be done.”

He sucked in a harsh breath, fury running through him. Then he lost his shit. “What? I’m telling you he’s gonna rip you off, and you don’t give a shit? Are you stupid?”

Marissa flinched back, and her face paled. Way to go asshole. The woman in front of him had helped his dad, and this was how he was repaying her. Calling her stupid? He balled his fists and hushed a curse.

He waited for it, exactly what he deserved for that comment. It was a low blow on his part. She stared back.

“No, I’m not. I’m also not crazy, weird, or a lunatic. Sorry I don’t fit your mold of what I should be, Caden, but that’s your problem, not mine.” Her lips flattened. “And I really don’t like it when you talk down to me. It’s not nice. Makes you sound too much like your brother.” She paused. “You’re better than that,” she whispered.

He expected her to shout, possibly curse him out or take a swing at him. He would have preferred anything than the reaction he got. Anger he could handle, but hurt? Fuck! He moved forward an inch, bending his knees and squatting down. This way she’d be forced to look at him.

“Shit,” he whispered, looking down at her crossed legs. He sighed. “Sorry, what I said was shitty.” He drew in a breath. He should be apologizing for the other night while he was at it. He’d handled the other situation just as bad as this one. He peered up at her, noticing her gaze locked on him. “This is why I’m single.”

She smirked, and Caden found himself smiling back at her. A small strand of dark hair whipped past her nose from the breeze, and his hand itched to slide it away. Before he could move, she did, leaning forward. She reached out her finger, lightly gliding over his forehead, between his brows, and down his nose.

She leaned closer, only a breath again. “I like your face when you’re not scowling, Caden.” She tilted her head. The perfect angle to take her lips.

Caden could not take his eyes off her. The sound of her voice was driving straight to his dick. She said his name on a whisper. He could envision her saying it while he was inside her.

I like your face when you’re not scowling, Caden.

It might have been the first time anyone had commented on his face. His body? Yeah, women liked it and didn’t hold back telling him so. His money? They loved that shit. But his face? Never. Until her. He veered his gaze toward the playground as he felt the heat rise in his neck. Thirty-five-year-old grown-ass man, blushing. Pussy.

“Where are ya staying?”

“The motel.”

He turned back to find her watching him. “Didn’t see your car there yesterday.”

The corners of her lips curled as she bit her lip. “Did you come back to check on me?”

“Just passing by and didn’t see your car in the lot.”
