She was headed back to the apartment but stopped when she noticed a door near the far end of the building. It was on the opposite side from the office she’d gone in the other day.

Someone hadn’t closed the door all the way. She grasped the knob and turned, confirming what she thought. It was locked but not fully fastened into the latch. She pushed open the door and walked in, scanning the large building. She had seen the tractor-trailers yesterday but had not gotten a good look. She’d always been curious. She headed to the back of the gray steel trailer. The doors swung open wide.

Marissa lifted her leg onto the trailer floor, tugging her body up, lying flat. It was bigger than she had imagined. Her steps echoed in the hollowed trailer, sounding louder than her steps actually were. It was dark, but she could see. She made her way to the back. Halfway through, she noticed the caged shelves on either side.

“What are you doing in here?”

Oh, his voice. Her body hadn’t responded to anything in two years, but his voice drew something out of her. It was an odd sensation. It awakened something inside, causing a stir she hadn’t felt in forever. She stepped back and watched Caden hop up onto the trailer. He had done it without hesitation or struggle.

She wobbled slightly on her feet as he approached. His feet pounded inside the trailer, and it shook. He stopped a few feet away.

“I was just looking around. I’m sorry, I should have asked if it was okay.”

“What are you looking for?” He glanced around the empty trailer.

“Nothing. I’ve never been inside a trailer. I wanted to see what it looked like.” She smiled. “I’ve passed a million of these trucks on the road and always wondered what they looked like inside.”

He snorted. “Is it everything you thought it would be?”

She smiled from his teasing tone. He was different from earlier, a little lighter. Maybe she had just caught him at a bad time. He hadn’t gotten distant until she mentioned his brother. Maybe Kase was the problem.

“I didn’t realize they had shelves inside,” she said, pointing behind her.

Caden eyed her. “Usually, they don’t. These are custom for the club.” His jaw locked, and he averted his gaze away from her.

“Sorry about earlier. I should have minded my own business.”

He stepped farther into the trailer and stopped directly across from her. He folded his arms, leaning his back against the trailer wall. He stared at her, masking any kind of emotion.

His gaze narrowed, and she gulped, steering her gaze anywhere but at Caden.

“Do you want me to go?” She peeked up through her lashes.

The corners of his eyes crinkled. “Do you wanna go?”

“No.”

“Then don’t go.”

It was a risk, but she was willing to take it.

She smirked. “Any chance I can get you to come over here?”

The lines in the corner of his eyes creased. His face was still tight, but his lips spread into a beautiful smile. “You’re trouble,” he whispered, and she sensed he was saying it more to himself rather than her. His back pushed off the wall, and he stalked toward her slowly. There was a rush of anticipation storming through her blood.

He stopped a foot away and eyed her with a heated gaze. There was no hiding his desire. “Now, what?” he asked in a teasing tone.

Marissa stepped closer and whispered, “You kiss me.”

He moved forward and grasped her waist, pulling her into his chest and slamming his lips against hers. She immediately reached out and grasped his neck. It had been so long since she’d had any inkling of desire for anything, even living, but she wanted this, she wanted him. She grabbed his shirt, bunching the material in her fists.

The vibration of his guttural groan rumbled against her lips right before his hands locked on her neck, tightening his grip and sending her head jolting against the metal wall. She gasped from the swift movement.

He didn’t back away from her. He stared. His gaze was tense and heated with a hint of something she didn’t recognize. Even in the dim trailer, she could tell his face was burning, darkening into a deep scarlet red. Was he mad? His fingers dug into her neck, adding pressure to her larynx.

“Cade?”

Then something changed. The air in the trailer seemed to shallow, and Caden muttered a curse.
